Fred T. Higginbotham (1878-1896) Canada

Fred Higginbotham is dead. Those were the words which were whispered in sorrowful tones by the citizens of Winnipeg yesterday morning. Bright and early the city was astir in the celebration of its holiday, but the news of the sad and untimely end of one of the most popular of its young men cast a gloom over all. It is indeed difficult to realize that "Fred" — as all called him — is no more.

Death in any form is an unwelcome visitor. But when it comes like a thief in the night and snatches a young man full of health and strength without a moment's warning, then truly is it a something to be feared. On Sunday afternoon Fred Higginbotham was seen on the streets of Winnipeg. He was in his wonted good humor, and no doubt had an unconscious pride in his athletic prowess. Those who saw him as perhaps the most foremost of Winnipeg’s athletes and as he passed along nodding or smiling at those he met, little was it thought that no more would Fred be seen alive. It is many a day since death had caused such widespread sorrow and regret in this city. Wherever one went yesterday he was certain to hear people speak of Fred Higginbotham, and not a word but the kindliest was uttered. Cut down in the youth and bloom of life with a career of prosperity and happiness before him that will never more be seen. Hockey circles have lost one of their, finest players. But not alone with hockeyists mourn his loss. Athletes in general will suffer by his demise, and without any exaggeration it may be said that Winnipeg has lost one of its most popular young men.

On Sunday afternoon Fred Higginbotham was passing a quiet hour at the residence of Mr. Joseph Hall, near River park. In the evening he took to amusing the children, giving them a ride on a pony. He jumped on the pony's back himself to show how he could ride, when the little animal swerved suddenly around a post and he was caught across the eyes by a wire clothes line, which he had not noticed, and was thrown backwards from the pony. He fell heavily to the ground, striking the back of his head, sustaining a fracture of the spinal cord. He was removed to the house and medical aid summoned, but the doctors saw there was no hope of his recovery. His whole body was paralyzed, but he retained consciousness until five o'clock in the morning, when evidences of complete collapse began to manifest themselves, and from that time he gradually sank until 8:40, when he breathed his last, dying in the arms of his bosom friend, Mr. Hail.

The remains were removed from Mr. Hall's residence to Thompson's undertaking rooms, where they remained all yesterday. This morning they were taken to 263 Graham street, where the deceased resided prior to his death. Half an hour before the time for the funeral procession to start, a large number of friends of the departed gathered around the house. Revs. Hugh Pedley, J. C. Walker and Dr. Sparling administered the last rites, and a chorus led by Dr. Smith sang "Nearer My God to Thee." Beautiful wreaths were sent in from numerous friends and placed on the coffin. The procession left the house at 12 o'clock and it was a most impressive sight as it moved down Main street. Following the hearse were hundreds of mourners on foot, and then came about a hundred bicyclists walking besides their wheels. A detachment from the Dragoons and a large string of vehicles followed. The corpse was placed on the eastbound train and many manly eyes were wet as the last of Fred Higginbotham left Winnipeg. The pall-hearers were J. Elliott, J. White, Geo. Merritt, Chas. Lacey, Jos. Hall and J. Armitage.

TWO BOYS DROWN IN ICY WATERS OF ATHABASKA RIVER

Third lad Narrowly Escapes—Had Been on Hike and Were Returning Home

(Canadian Press Dispatch.)

Edmonton, Alta., March 14. — Icy water of the Athabaska river claimed the lives of two boys Saturday afternoon and a third lad narrowly escaped. The dead are Donald McDonald and Steve Higginbotham, both nine years old.

The two boys, along with Jack Ewing, the same age, were on a hike when the tragedy occurred. McDonald was the son of Fred McDonald, ticket agent at Edsou, and was visiting Higginbotham and Ewing, who both reside with their parents at Jasper.

The lads started out on a hike early in the day and were returning home. Crossing the river ice at the railway bridge, half a mile west of the town, the boys walked onto a thin stretch. McDonald and Higginbotham broke through and were locked beneath the edge of the ice. Ewing, a few feet behind them, stopped at the brink. Neither Higginbotham nor McDonald appeared after sinking the first time.

Racing for help, Ewing met Steve Higginbotham's father and informed him of the tragedy. Mr. McDonald was communicated with and a special train was rushed to the scene.

After the ice had been broken by several blasts of dynamite, the two bodies were recovered 200 feet from where they had been drawn into the water.
