Robert H. Higginbotham (????-1866) CO

A man named Anderson Orr shot and killed a colored man named Robert H. Higginbotham, at Central City, Colorado, on the 29th ult. The difficulty was occasioned about the ownership of land claimed by Orr, but on which the colored man had squatted and was making preparations to build.

A FORMER CITIZEN DEAD.
A. A. Higinbotham, Who Lived in Leavenworth Many Years, Passes Away at Denver.
Word has been received of the death at Denver yesterday morning of A. A. Higinbotham, formerly a well known citizen of this place. Mr. Higinbotham came to Leavenworth from Virginia in 1857, and engaged in the real estate business here. His operations were extensive, and he will be remembered by old timers as having built and lived in the house now owned and occupied by Fred Harvey.
Mr. Higinbotham left Leavenworth about fifteen years ago, and went to Leadville, where he had certain mining interests. He subsequently engaged in real estate in Denver, and was so employed up to his death. Mr. Higinbotham was about 70 years of age. A week or ten days ago, while undergoing an operation for hernia, he was stricken with paralysis, and did not regain consciousness till the end came. Mr. Higinbotham was Senator Baker's father-in-law.

E. B. Baker left Sunday for Denver, Colorado, to attend the funeral of his grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Higinbotham. Mrs. Higinbotham died Saturday night after a lingering illness at the age of 80 years. She was the widow of Alexander Higinbotham, a Leavenworth pioneer. The Higinbothams lived here from 1855 to 1880, when they moved to Colorado. Mrs. Higinbotham was the mother of the late Senator Lucien Baker's wife, who died five years ago.

During his life Alexander Higinbotham was engaged in the land business and dealt largely with the city in the matter of tax titles.

Higginbottom - Mrs. Mattie Higginbottom of Galatea, Col., died yesterday at St. Luke's Hospital. She was 43 years old and leaves two sons, Powell and Burney Higginbottom, both of Galatea. The body was taken to Eureka Springs, Ark., last night.

Miss Frances Higinbotham Died Tuesday in Denver, Colo. - Funeral There Today

Miss Frances Higinbotham, age 68 years, late of Denver, Colo., died last Tuesday of pneumonia and the funeral will take place this morning at the Yeager mortuary chapel, Denver.

Miss Higinbotham is survived by one brother and five nephews and nieces. She was the daughter of Alexander A. Higinbotham, one of the pioneer business men of Leadville, Colo., in its boom days.

Miss Higinbotham was a sister of the late Mrs. Lucian Baker. Her childhood and young womanhood were spent in Leavenworth. Her father built and occupied the present home of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Parker.

Miss Higinbotham was a fine musician and a woman of fine and loveable qualities, and her many friends here regret to learn of her death.

DENVER. Colo., April 15.-One man was killed and many others were seriously injured in a severe storm that has swept Colorado and Wyoming.

H. T. Higginbotham, 45, of Stephenville, Texas, was killed on the highway near Greeley, Colo., when he was struck by a Colorado motorway bus.

Word has been received from Denver, Colo., announcing the death of Arthur Olin Higinbotham, formerly of Windsor. He was born in Windsor June 11, 1877, and was the son of the late John E. and Julia O. Higinbotham. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Higinbotham, two sons, two daughters, and a sister, Mrs. Frederick M. Lamphear of 223 Poquonock Avenue.

Mr. Higinbotham moved to Denver with his family 21 years ago.

PIONEER LADY LAID TO REST HERE SUNDAY

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home for Mrs. John Heginbotham, conducted by Rev. Tom Franks of the Methodist church. A quartet composed of Mrs. R.N. White, Mrs. Leon Kepler, Guy L. Bereman, and Dr. P.S. Struble sang two numbers. Pall bearers were Fred Borland, George King, Leon Kepler, Guy L. Bereman, Otto Fulscher and Clarence Smith. Interment was made in the Holyoke cemetery.

Melissa Happy Heginbotham was born at Bearsville, New York, November 29, 1857 and departed from this life on May 8, 1946 following three weeks of illness. She was married at Brooklyn, Iowa to John Heginbotham, where they resided until coming to Holyoke in 1888. She had lived here continuously since that time. Therefore, she was truly a pioneer.

Mr. Heginbotham passed away on October 8, 1936. The deceased are survived by two sons, William and George, of Holyoke, and by Mrs. Jennie Paul, now living in Long Beach, California. There are two grandchildren, Max Heginbotham of Holyoke and Mrs. Leah TeBockhorst of Denver, Colorado. There are also two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Heginbotham was a lifelong member of the Methodist church. Her father was a Methodist minister.

MRS. GEORGE B. HEGINBOTHAM DIES; LAST RITES SUNDAY

Mrs. George B. Heginbotham, well known and highly esteemed Holyoke lady who spent most of her life in this community, passed away early Friday morning at the Phillips County Hospital where she had been a patient one week. She had been in poor health for sometime. Mrs. Heginbotham was 69 years old.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Holyoke Baptist church, with Rev. Alvah C. Lynch officiating. Interment was in Holyoke Memorial Park. Arrangements were in charge of the Lewis Funeral Home.

Mrs. Heginbotham's parents were charter members of the local Baptist church and Mrs. Heginbotham became a member of that church at an early age. She was active in church work for many years. In addition to her church activities she was a member of Fidelis club, P.E.O. Sisterhood and Order of the Eastern Star.

As Blanche Garland, the daughter of George W. and Arpy (Gillaspey) Garland, Mrs. Heginbotham was born May 8, 1885, at Chariton, Iowa. The family moved to Holyoke in 1888 and she grew to womanhood here, attending the local schools and being graduated with the first senior class of Phillip s County High School in 1906.

She taught school in this community for a time after her graduation from high school, later leaving that position to accept a position as clerk at the Golden Rule store.

On January 1, 1911 she was united in marriage to George B. Heginbotham. To this union was born one son, Max, who now resides on a ranch south of Holyoke.

Surviving Mrs. Heginbotham are her husband; the son, already mentioned; a brother, George F. Garland; two grandchildren, John and Diana Heginbotham; and a number of other relatives and many friends.

Greene - Funeral services for Elmer Higginbottom were held in Denver, Colo., Wednesday. He is a former resident of Greene and the husband of the former Laura Beguelin, Greene. Mrs. Alfred Beguelin, Greene, and Mrs. Ida Peck, Waterloo, attended the funeral of their brother-in-law.

GEORGE HEGINBOTHAM RITES HELD HERE; 79-YEAR RESIDENT

George B. Heginbotham, 83, well known retired businessman who had resided in Holyoke since early childhood, passed away Thursday evening, November 23, Thanksgiving Day, at Melissa Memorial Hospital here.

Mr. Heginbotham had been in failing health for three months and was twice hospitalized at the Presbyterian Hospital in Denver and at the local hospital.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 27, at the Holyoke Methodist church, with Rev. Gerald Dingman officiating. Interment was at Holyoke Memorial Park. The Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A son of John B. and Melissa E. Heginbotham, George B. Heginbotham was born October 26, 1884, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He moved to Holyoke with his parents in 1888 and received his early education in the Holyoke schools. Later he attended the military academy in Kearney, Nebraska.

Mr. Heginbotham, along with is father and brother, W.E. Heginbotham, was engaged in banking here for a number of years. He entered the automobile business with his brother-in-law, George F. Garland, in 1918, continuing in that for some time, and he also had farming interests in this community.

On January 1, 1911, Mr. Heginbotham was united in marriage to Blanche Garland of Holyoke. To this union was born one son, Max, who preceded his father in death in 1957. Mrs. Heginbotham passed away in 1954.

Mr. Heginbotham became a member of the Holyoke Methodist church on November 11, 1900. Following his marriage, he attended the Baptist church with his wife, who was a member of that church. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge during his active years.

Survivors include one brother, W.E. Heginbotham, Holyoke; one sister, Mrs. Jennie Paul, Denver; two grandchildren, John Heginbotham, Newcastle, Wyoming and Mrs. Phil Lockwood; two great grandchildren; one niece, Mrs. Leah TeBockhurst, Denver, and many friends.

Saturday Traffic Accidents Kill Two in State

Separate traffic accidents in Denver Saturday claimed two live, boosting Colorado's 1974 highway fatality count to 24 compared to 32 on this date a year ago.

The State Police identified the victims as Guadalupe Garcia, 48, of Denver, and James L. Higginbotham, 53, of Lakewood...

Higginbotham was killed Saturday night when his auto went out of control on a North Denver boulevard, crossed over a center line and skidded into the path of a car driven by David L. Finfrock, 21, Denver. FinFrock was not injured, the patrol said.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 1, 1974, at McConaty's Boulevard Mortuary in Denver, for Jennie H. Paul who passed away Monday, February 27, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver.

Jennie Heginbotham Paul was born March 11, 1880 in Brooklyn, Iowa to Melissa E. Happy Heginbotham and John B. Heginbotham.

October 29, 1901, she was married to Charles Earl Paul, and to this union one child, Leah, was born.

Charles E. Paul was a banker, associated with the Citizens State Bank in Holyoke, which later became part of the First National Bank. Mr. Paul passed away in March 1948, at Long Beach, California.

Mrs. Paul has been living in Denver since January 1958.

She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Lea Paul TeBockhorst; four grandchildren, Carol Bilello, Joyce Edwinson, Earl Paul TeBockhorst and Cheryl Ives; four great grandchildren, Jeannie, Jennifer and Susan Bilello, and Garth Edwinson.

Mrs. Olive Higginbotham, 76, 409 26th Ave. Ct., died Monday, April 18, at Weld County General Hospital where she had been a patient for a few days.

She was born Sept. 3, 1900, at Vernon.

On Sept. 26, 1923, she was married to Lee F. Higginbotham at Holyoke.

They lived in Eaton many years prior to moving to Carbondale about 33 years ago. They came to Greeley three years ago.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge at Carbondale.

Survivors include her husband, Lee F. Higginbotham; a daughter, Mrs. Dick (Willa) Kercher of Greeley; two sons, Lee F. Jr. of Greeley and George S. of Carbondale; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lucy Stephens of Eaton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Services for Oliver Adelbert Higinbothan Jr. of Englewood will be 10 a.m. Tuedday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be 10 a.m. 909 E. Tufts, Englewood. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery.

Higinbotham,60, died Aug. 23rd in Lubeck, West Germany.

He was born on April 11, 1926 in Denver. He graduated from South High School. Higinbotham attended the University of Colorado and the University of Northern Colorado. He received a master's degree in teaching and was a teacher at Isaac Newton Junior High in Littleton.

Higinbotham served as seaman first class in the U.S. Navy.
He married Birdie Epstein July 11, 1947, in Denver.

Survivors include his wife; his sons, Dan w. and Harry M. both of Provo, Utah; his daughter, Ann Anderson of Bluffdale, Utah and his father, Oliver A. Sr. of Denver. Higinbotham also is survived by two grandsons and a granddaughter.

Butte native Carole E. Higinbotham, 48, died Tuesday in Lakewood, Colo.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home.

She was born Aug 25, 1943, in Butte to George and Eva Thurston and she attended local schools. She married Samuel Higinbotham in 1964 and they left the area the following year.

Mrs. Higinbotham had worked as a telephone operator.

Survivors include her husband of Lakewood; daughters and son-in-law, Suzanne and Lisa Ann, both of Lakewood, and Diane and Scott Burns of Austin, Texas; one grandchild; her parents of Butte; sister, Georgann Kugler of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and brother, William Thurston of Kansas City, Mo.

Memorials are directed to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Higginbotham was born Nov. 14, 1930, in Kansas City, Mo., to William B. and Pearl (Payton) Higginbotham, who are deceased.
He is survived by a son, Scott Bone; two daughters, Cindy Borst and Susan Jensen; and five grandchildren.

Leland LeRoy Higinbotham, 89, of Castle Rock, formerly of Akron, died Wednesday at Brookside Inn in Castle Rock. Higinbotham was born Dec. 9, 1913, in Akron to Roy and Letha (Harrington) Higinbotham. He graduated from Akron High School in 1931. He married Marjorie Davisson Sept. 15, 1935, and worked as a mail carrier and at his father's gas station. Higinbotham moved to the Denver area where he worked at Brannen Sand & Gravel, Continental Airlines, the Remington Arms Plant at Lowry Field and then returned to Akron to farm and run the Coast to Coast store. They moved to Fort Morgan in 1973 where he worked as an appraiser for the assessor's office. He moved to Loveland in 1987 and then to Mesa, Ariz., and back to Denver. Higinbotham was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; his parents; a brother, Ivan, and a sister, Darlene. He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Brinkman of Pueblo, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and his brother, Larry of Pueblo. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. in the Akron Cemetery . Larry Higinbotham will officiate. Olinger Andrews Caldwell Funeral Home, Castle Rock, and the Brenner Funeral Home, Akron, are in charge of arrangements.

Victor Wayne Higginbotham (1954-2004) England/CO
MONTROSE - Longtime Montrose resident and businessman, Victor Wayne Higginbotham, died Sunday evening, June 27, 2004, at the Montrose Memorial Hospital 12 days after celebrating his 50th birthday.
Victor was born in Norfolk, England, on June 15, 1954, the son of Dan George and Jewel (Williams) Higginbotham. He was an infant when he moved with his family on Sept. 2, 1954, to Texas, then relocated to Montrose in 1969. Victor graduated from Montrose High School and continued to pursue his education at Parrent College in North Richland Hills, Texas.
Following his college education, Victor returned to Montrose where he made his home until the time of his death.
He married Sue Chambers on Sept. 1, 1978, in Montrose. After 20 years of marriage, they were divorced.
Victor was the owner and operator of Associated Precast in Montrose since 1991.
He was a member of Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053.
The love of Victor's life was his family, friends and music. Music played a very important part in his life. Victor enjoyed the outdoors spending time camping, hunting, and with his animals. Precious memories of Victor will always be a huge part of all those who loved him.
Surviving family members who were proud to share Victor's life include a daughter, Heather and husband Tyler Gilliam, of Montrose, Colo.; two granddaughters: Jacquelyn and Ashley Gilliam; his mother, Jewel Higginbotham, of Temple, Texas; two sisters: Karen Hargrove, of Temple, Texas; Diane and husband Richard Cortreras, of San Antonio, Texas; and special nieces and nephews: Jay and Shelly Contreras, Tracie Arwood, Corey Huffman and Freeman Hargrove. His extended family include Joey and Marla Manganello, and Marvin and Terri Yates and wife Terri and son Dominic, all of Montrose, Colo.
Victor was preceded in death by his father, Dan Higginbotham, in 1971.
A funeral service in loving remembrance and to celebrate Victor's life will be officiated by Minister Ronnie Hanna on Friday, July 2, at 10 a.m. at the Montrose Christian Church. Interment will follow in the Grand View Cemetery, west of Montrose.

Sylvia (Pat) Fread was born February 15, 1935 in Polk, Missouri, the daughter of Jesse R. and Sylvia V. Higginbotham.

She married Warren O. Fread on Sept. 27, 1955, in Springfield, MO. Sylvia died in her home on April 18, 2014 from a failing heart.

Sylvia is survived by her son Warren; daughter Deborah; grandchildren Ashley, Blayne, Theodore and Wayne; sisters Marci Dee, Joyce, Peggy and Judy; brothers Troy and Coy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Warren O. Fread, parents Jesse and Sylvia (Hale) Higginbotham, brother Roy Higginbotham and sister Frieda Higginbotham.

Sylvia has requested to be cremated and memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday April 28, 2014, at The Grant Mortuary Chapel with Mervin Johnson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's Kitchen in care of Grant Mortuary.

Boyd Higginbotham (1940-2017) IN/CO

Boyd Higginbotham, 76, of Colorado Springs, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017. He was born in Terre Haute, IN on March 27, 1940 to the late Anna-Mary and Curtis Higginbotham. Boyd was a retired business professional, who worked with Springs Transit Department for 27 years. Boyd was an active community member; he enjoyed the great outdoors, and was a very devout man. He enjoyed sharing his beliefs with anyone who was blessed enough to cross his path. He is survived by 3 children, Boyd Higginbotham Jr.; Diane Evans (Tracy), and Orlanda Moore (George), 12 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bobby. A private viewing will be held for the family. Anna Maye Grubb Burton Higginbotham (1929-2017) WV/CO

Anna Maye (Burton) Higginbotham, passed away peacefully on Aug. 20, 2017 at University Park Care Center in Pueblo, Colo. Born Anna Maye Grubb, the second of six children, she arrived in this world on Jan. 31, 1929 to Norman and Gladys Grubb of Cunard, W. Va. Her father was a coal miner and her mother was a traditional housewife. Anna Maye married twice during her lifetime, first to Arthur Manuel Burton of Nuttleburg, W. Va. and later, following Arthur’s death on New Year’s Eve, 1986, to Donald Ray Higginbotham of Kansas City, Kan. Sadly Don, too, died in late 2013. Anna Maye was also preceded in death by her father, Norman; her mother, Gladys; and siblings, Hurschell David Grubb, Billy James Grubb, Raymond Bobby Grubb, Lula Belle (Grubb) Mikel and Donald Gene Lanham. Survivors include her daughters, Deanna Marie Handcock, Freda Louise Schmeichel, Carolyn Sue Burgess; her son, Arthur Manuel Burton Jr.; a brother, Norman “Scotty” Grubb; step-sister, Brenda Lanham; half-sisters, Gazelle Gaye Tanner and Angela Faye Pence; step-sons, Scott Higginbotham, Michael Higginbotham and Travis Higginbotham; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. The viewing for Anna Maye will be held at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton on Saturday, August 26 from 1-4 p.m., immediately followed by the funeral service at 4 p.m. The family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel.

Elbert Donald Higginbotham was born February 16, 1952 in Phoenix, Arizona the son of Frank Donald and Mary Louise (Shepard) Higginbotham. He passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023 at The Vista Grande Inn at the age of 71.
