Vernon was the son of Frances Marion Higginbotham and Lucy Margaret Higginbotham and the grandson of Alexander Brown Higginbotham and Eliza Frances Plunkett. He was born in Nelson County, Virginia and lived in Amherst County, Virginia. His siblings were Marvin W. Higginbotham (02/17/1887 - aft 1917) and Lelia Adeline Higginbotham Ferrell (02/23/1882 - 05/07/1917).

He died of influenza while waiting to go overseas in the service of his country during World War I.
He was interred in the Family Cemetery.
