Services for Mrs. Susanna M. Baker, 79, of 2501 Tenth avenue S., who died Tuesday, will be 3 p.m. Friday at Davies chapel, with burial in Lakewood cemetery.

A Minneapolis resident 55 years, Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband, George H.

Salt Lake City-A 28-year-old laborer was apparently buried alive last night in a newly filled subdivision sewer ditch.

The body of Vern Higginbotham was recovered three hours after a fellow worker discovered that he was missing.

Police said Higginbotham, a native of Bemidji, Minn., was apparently trapped when a bulldozer scooped dirt into the 12-foot deep ditch. There were no witnesses.

Mrs. Peggy R. Higginbotham, 82, 120 Washington St., died Friday at 4:50 p.m. at Community Memorial Hospital after suffering a stroke seven weeks ago.

She formerly had been a housekeeper in a Bemidji hospital more than 25 years. the former Peggy Boardman, she was born Aug. 30, 1884 in Arlington, S.D., to Lyman and Etta Spencer Boardman. She married Ben Higginbotham. He died in 1960. She lived here two years and prior to that in Bemidji.

Survivors are one brother, Milton, Winona, and two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Poss, Winona and Mrs. Etta Mae Crecelius, Corydon, ind. Three brothers and five sisters have died.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Breitlow Funeral Home, the Rev. C.F. Kurzweg, assisting pastor at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Witoka Cemetery.

Valma Irene Parks Davis Higgenbotham (1908-1979) MN
Mrs. Valma I. Higgenbotham, 70, Bemidji, died suddenly at the home of her son in Bagley on Monday.
Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Bemidji with the Rev. Ray Person officiating. Burial will be in the Bagley City Cemetery under the direction of the Cease Funeral Home in Bagley. Reviewal will be held at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Mrs. Higgenbotham was born July 4, 1908 in Park Rapids. She married Dick Davis in 1927 at Bemidji. He died in 1957. In 1958 she married Ben Higgenbotham in Bemidji. He died in 1963.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Bemidji. She lived 10 years in Alaska, 15 years in the Nebish area, and the last two years in Bemidji.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Davis, Bagley, and Robert Davis, Buena Vista, Colorado; one daughter, Verna (Mrs. Don Boe), Anchorage, Alaska; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Parks, Minneapolis; four sisters, Esther (Mrs. Magnus Lone), Englewood, California, Grace (Mrs. George Prescott), Bemidji, Martha (Mrs. Stanley Mitchel), Kirkwood, New York; and Leona (Mrs. Pat Horner), Brooklyn Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and two brothers.

Janis D. Higginbotham Kraetz (1962-2005) NE/MN

Janis D. Kraetz (nee Higginbotham) Born March 27, 1962, beloved wife to William, mother to Erica and Andrea, and step-mother to Jillisa and Christopher, passed away Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005. She is further survived by mother, Mary Helen Higginbotham and brothers, John and Daryl Higginbotham of North Platte, NE; sisters, Debra Higginbotham of Santa Fe, NM and Lisa (Higginbotham) Arnold of Maple Grove, MN. She was preceded in eternal life by sisters, Ronna Higginbotham, Marcia (Higginbotham) Topliff and Father, Willie Higginbotham. Growing up in North Platte, Nebraska, Janis moved to Madison, Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, she moved to Minnesota working for Honeywell, Guidant and most recently Medtronic. To know Janis was to know love, caring, adventure and faith. She had a smile that could light up a room with sparkling eyes that could look deep into your soul. She was a caring and sensitive mother, active in scouting and ultimately loving to Erica and Andrea. She had a spirit of adventure that took us to some of the most beautiful spots in the world, and a warmth and foundation in faith that grounded our family. Grover Stanley Higginbotham, 92, of Edina, MN and Naples, FL, died on July 8, 2007. He is deeply missed by his wife, Vivian; children, Chris Slaven and Ken (Ava); grandchildren; and great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends around the country. He was preceded in death by his brother, Willard "Pete"; father, Grover and mother, Christine. He was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, Naples Council on World Affairs and United States Naval Academy Alumni Association. He was born in Amherst County, VA. He was Valedictorian at Buena Vista High School in Virginia. He was one of the youngest graduates at the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1935. He had a distinguished 29year career as a United States Naval officer. His first ship was the battleship USS. Arizona (BB39) from 1935 to 1938 where he served in the gunnery and engineering departments. In WW II, he served aboard the battleship USS. Texas (BB-35) and was promoted to commanding officer of the destroyer USS. Albert W. Grant (DD-649) in the Pacific where he received the Bronze Star. After the war, he attended the Army Guided Missile School in Ft. Bliss, TX and graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, RI. Later notable career assignments included staff officer to the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon, Chief of Staff to Commander Cruiser Division Two, United States Sixth Fleet, commanding officer USS. Ponchatoula (AO-148), Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the then largest oil tanker in the Navy, commanding officer Destroyer Squadron 25 "The Pineapple Fleet", Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the then largest destroyer squadron in the Navy and Chief of Staff to Commander United States Seventh Fleet in Yokosuka, Japan. Upon retirement from the Navy as a Captain, he worked for 15 years in management for Sperry Univac at their offices in Salt Lake City, UT, Los Angeles, CA and St. Paul, MN. In Salt Lake City he earned a Master's degree in Engineering Administration from the University of Utah and was made a member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary society. While in Los Angeles, he headed the development of the onboard computer system for the S-3A carrier based anti-submarine aircraft built by Lockheed. He continued to provide consulting services to Univac after his retirement. He and Vivian traveled extensively with destinations to China, Europe and an around-the-world cruise. Our family lost a loving husband and father, our communities lost a dear friend and our country lost an honored patriot and a wonderful ambassador. Private internment in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota.

Pearl Eleanor Mattson Higginbotham (1923-2007) MN
Higginbotham, Pearl (Mattson) Age 84, of Edina, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer and joined her heavenly father on December 5, 2007. Preceded in death by parents, Herman and Ellen Mattson; brother, Jack Mattson. Survived by her children Mary Ellen Pinkham, John (Nancy) Higginbotham, Sue Rosener, and Tom (Kim) Higginbotham; grandchildren, Andrew (Gretchen) Pinkham, Ellen (Quinton) Rutters, David (Flur), Ben and Alex Higginbotham, JJ (Shechele) Rosener, and Ali Higginbotham; great-grandchildren, Maya Rutters, Lucas and Grant Rosener; brothers, Glenn (June) and Roy (Marge) Mattson and their families; many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends and former employees of Pearl Bath. Pearl was a devoted Christian, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and businesswoman. Born and raised in Minneapolis, she started selling Jacuzzi whirlpools in 1969 which eventually led to the creation of a company called Pearl Baths in 1980. She always put people in front of business, which made her company one of the top in the country. She received much notoriety and accolades for being one of the top businesswomen in Minnesota. Pearl always put her heart and soul in everything she did. She was a very giving person, including her personal support of a Christian orphanage in India which bore her name. Pearl was a shining light for many people. She always had a kind word and helping hand for anyone who was in need. She was strong in spirit and in her love for God, family and friends and nature. Elizabeth Maxine Billock Higginbotham (1926-2007) MN
Betty was 81, a life-long Grand Rapids resident. She was born Elizabeth Maxine Billock in 1926 to Clarence and Josephine Billock, owners of Southside Grocery and 50 year employee of Blandin Paper Company. In 1947 she married Theodore Richard "Ted" Higginbotham. They owned and operated a local drive-in restaurant, "Ted's Broaster" from 1957 to 1974. In 1949 they welcomed their only child, Richard John. Following Ted's death in 1965 Betty operated "Ted's Broaster" and after selling the enterprise, she was head cook at the Forest Lake Restaurant in Grand Rapids until her retirement. She enjoyed traveling, considering the highlight to be a trip to the Vatican. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Joanne Billock. She is survived by one son, Richard of Grand Rapids, Minn.; one sister, Beverly (Robert O.) Black of Grand Rapids, Minn.; one brother, Clarence "Sonny" Billock of Grand Rapids, Minn.; a grandson, Shawn (Sarah) Higginbotham of Brainerd, Minn.; one granddaughter, Samantha (Chad) LeSarge of Bovey, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Christian and Lily Higginbotham and Mychal LeSarge.

Rosener, Susan C. Born in Minneapolis on Sept 29, 1950 to the family of Al and Pearl Higginbotham. She graduated from West High School. She will be missed by her beloved son, JJ and his wife Shechele; grandsons, Lucas and Grant; and siblings, Mary Ellen, John and Tom; and many dear friends. Sue has requested a private service. Higginbotham, Vivian Age 93 of Edina, MN, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2012. She was born in 1919 in San Bernardino, CA and raised in Beverly Hills, CA. Her father was a Hollywood screenwriter. In 1937 she married Grover Higginbotham ("Higgie"), a Naval officer and graduate of the Naval Academy serving aboard the battleship U.S.S. Arizona. Throughout his 29-year career, they lived in many places including Panama, Hawaii and Japan. After retiring from the Navy in 1964, Higgie worked for Univac. They were transferred to Salt Lake City, UT where Vivian became active in the Sierra Club and the Wasatch Mountain Club. She loved snowshoeing in the winter and hiking in the summer, and attended numerous Club sponsored events and outings, including a camping trip down the Colorado River in whitewater rafts. They were transferred to the Los Angeles area for two years and then finally to the Twin Cities in 1971. Vivian was active in the Edina Newcomers Club and enjoyed cross-country skiing. In the years after Higgie's retirement from Univac in 1981, and after her recovery from a bout of cancer, they took cruises to the Caribbean, the Eastern Mediterranean, and a fabulous cruise around the world. They also enjoyed a three- week trip to mainland China. In 1986 Vivian and Higgie moved to Naples, FL where they had a condominium on the beach. In 1993 they bought a condominium in Edina which became their summer home, and in 2006 they moved to Edina permanently. Higgie passed away the following year. They were married 69 years. Vivian was an inspiration for all. She is survived by her daughter, Christine Slaven of Mercer Island, WA; son, Ken Higginbotham (Ava) of Eden Prairie, MN; granddaughters, Tane Larrabee (Wayne) of Mercer Island, WA, and Shawn Slaven of Mercer Island, WA; grandsons, Benjamin Higginbotham (Cariann) of Anaheim, CA, Robert Higginbotham (Leah) of Ham Lake, MN, and Ryan Higginbotham (Terese) of Savage, MN; and 6 great-grandchildren. Family members wish to express their deep appreciation to the dedicated and caring professionals and volunteers at Edina Park Plaza and St. Croix Hospice. Vivian will be interred in a private ceremony at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Jack Douglas Higginbotham, 84, Mankato, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at his home.

Jack was born Aug. 27, 1928, to Floyd and Myrtle (Adams) Higginbotham in Iola. He graduated from Iola High School. Jack attended Iola Junior College and received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Kansas State university. He was united in marriage to to Shirley Halbe on Aug. 20, 1950, in Iola. Jack served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He worked as an engineer in the flour milling industry in Denver, Mankato and New Prague, Minn. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mankato and the Association of Operative Millers. Jack enjoyed woodworking, reading, fishing, reloading shells and watching golf on television.

Jack is survived by his wife, Shirley Higginbotham; son, Jack Douglas Higginbotham and his wife, Kim, Des Moines; daughter, Sue Eide, Owatonna; eight grandchildren; a brother, John Higginbotham and his wife, Carol, Iola; and extended family.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Paul, in 2004; a sister, Sharon; and a brother, Jimmie.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Mankato with Rev. Harold Tongen officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Mankato Mortuary and wiull continue one hour before service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Mankato. Memorials may be given to the Harry Meyering Center or MSCI.

Grace A. Current, age 91, of Mapleton, died on Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Mapleton Community Home. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Bible Church in Mapleton with Rev. Betty Johnson officiating. Memorials are preferred to Faith Bible Church. Grace was born on August 27, 1924 to Henry and Cora (Watson) Higginbotham in Nebish Township, Beltrami County, Minnesota. She attended elementary school in Pleasant Valley country school and graduated from Bemidji High School in 1942. On October 12, 1942, Grace was united in marriage to Marion (Pat) Current in Bemidji. They moved to Winnebago in 1948. Grace was employed at local restaurants and Stokely Van Camp in Winnebago. They moved to Lake Crystal in 1975 where Grace worked at Lakeview Café and Tony Downs Foods in Madelia. She retired in 1986 and they returned to Winnebago and enjoyed eight years of retirement at their daughter Pam’s acreage. They then moved to Mapleton in 1994. Grace is survived by three children, Janice (Melvin) Soderholm; Steve (Margaret) Current; and Pamela (Ernie) Fuhrman; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pat in 1997; son, Mike; step-father, Selmer Klungseth; brother, Vernon Higginbotham; two step-brothers, Gerald Klungseth and Marvin Klungseth; step-sisters, Selina Stratton and Adeline Erlandson.

Bagley, Minnesota Mark Allen Higginbotham, 54, of Bagley, Minnesota died on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at his home. Mark was born on January 25, 1963 in Fosston, Minnesota the son of Paul and Emily (Schummer-Higginbotham) Everhart. Mark attended school in both Shevlin and in Bagley. He worked various jobs including Marty Brother’s Feed Store, and had his own businesses: Mark’s Tree Service and Logging, In-Debt Logging, and Higginbotham Logging, and was currently employed with Thorstad Companies. Mark married Renee Gray on June 6, 1981 in Bagley, MN. They were married for 12 years, and continued to have a lasting friendship to this day. Mark was a volunteer of the Bagley Fire Department for over 10 years. Mark’s true passion was working on race cars with his boys and attending the dirt track races with them. Deer hunting every year was just as special, as it was quality time with his daughter. He was a NASCAR fan, loved to ice fish, and tending the feed plots on his land. Mark always looked forward to his yearly trips to Arizona in the winter. Mark loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren; he will be tremendously missed. Janice "Jan" Higganbotham, of Brainerd, MN was 92 years of age when she passed away Monday, December 4, 2017 at Good Samaritan Village - Brainerd. Interment will be at Cannon Falls Community Cemetery.

Higginbotham, Elizabeth "Betty", 91, went to her eternal home on August 12, 2018. Preceded in death by husband, Irvin D. Higginbotham; granddaughter, Shantelle Bourke; great-grandson, Aaron Nelson. Survived by daughter, Connie (Birger) Kylander; grandchildren, LaDonna (Daniel) Lemmenes, Jason Stip, Cindy Nelson, John Kylander, Phillip (Danae) Kylander; 15 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren. Age 86 Died peacefully on November 22 at home in Mendota Heights, surrounded by friends and family. She was born October 1, 1933 in Amarillo, TX to Frank and Virginia Higinbotham. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Kit Bingham, her sister Jan Austin, nieces Julia and Carolyn Austin and great nieces and nephews Eryl and Noah Austin-Bingamon and Isaac and Hannah Young. Also very important to her were her "honorary" grandchildren Sterling and Steven Thornberg and Chris and Claire Weatherly and great-grandson Sterling Thornberg II. After graduating from Amarillo High School, she shook the dust of the Texas Panhandle from her shoes and headed north to the University of Chicago. She worked briefly in the financial sector before starting a secretarial career at the University of Chicago. Her last position there was as executive secretary of the Statistics department where she met and married Kit, a newly hired assistant professor. Five years later in 1972 they moved to St. Paul, MN. In the Twin Cities, Carolyn became deeply involved with the recovery community. She did important service in AA with leadership at local and area levels. Her 45 years of continuous sobriety was an inspiration to many. She also volunteered in the AARP Senior Driving program, rising to become Minnesota coordinator of the program. Carolyn had an amazing green thumb and sense of design, whether planning a garden or arranging a floral centerpiece. She loved her terraced garden. Carolyn truly loved people and brought out the best in them, accepting them as they were without trying to change them. She was witty and sharp and appreciated all of life. Her sense of humor and her wise and gentle ways will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched. Memorials to Red Cloud Indian School, RAICES or the charity of your choice.

Shirley L. Higginbotham died in her home on December 24, 2019 at the age of 88.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 30 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Sunday December 29 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Shirley was born on April 14, 1931 in Salina, Kansas to George and Marjorie (Weidman) Halbe. Her mother died when Shirley was a young girl and her father re-married, Frances Anderson, the only mother Shirley knew and loved. Shirley was united in marriage to Jack Higginbotham, who died in 2013. They had three children, Paul Michael Higginbotham, who died in 2004, Sue Eide and her husband Dale, who died in 2007 and Jack Douglas and Kim Higginbotham. Shirley had nine grandchildren, Lisa Eide, Karen Eide, Robert Eide, who died in 1979, Callie Higginbotham and Eric Mead and their daughter, Abigail Higginbotham and Mark Krogmann, Britta Higginbotham and Michael Chalhoub, Jeremy and Cassie Heller and their daughter, Matthew and Kristy Heller, and Jeffrey and Sarah Heller and their three children. She had one brother, Doug and Norine Halbe.
Shirley had a master's degree in library science from Denver University. She was the director of the Mankato Library and was very proud of the expansions and growth she saw in the system during her tenure. Shirley served on many area non-profit boards and gave much of her time as a volunteer in the community. Some of the organizations she was involved with were YWCA, Horizon Homes, and Harry Meyering Center Board of Directors, Merely Players Community Theater, Friends of the Library, and Zonta. Her love of libraries continued into retirement where she managed and expanded the library at the First Presbyterian Church. Shirley enjoyed reading and gardening.
Shirley faced her Alzheimer's diagnosis with resolve, pragmatism, and a little humor. She continued living her life fully until her final days as she did the rest of her life. She did not let some adversity hold her back.
The family would like to thank Abby and Britta Higginbotham, who were Shirley's primary caregiver's at the end of her life.\

MARSHALL — A private family graveside service will be held for Darlyne Larson, 92, of Marshall.
Darlyne passed away peacefully Friday, April 16, 2021, surrounded by family, at Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall.
Darlyne Anne (Higginbotham) Larson was born April 5, 1929, in Nashwauk, to Robert and Clara (Rollin) Higginbotham. The family moved to Alaska when the Alaskan Highway was completed. Darlyne graduated from Palmer, Alaska, then returned to Minnesota, where she trained to be an LPN. She worked at Glen Lake Sanatorium and Hennepin County Public Health in their Chest Center. Darlyne was united in marriage to Charles Sims, and to that union were born three children: Kimberly, Chris, and Tracy Sims. She was later married to Wendell Larson of Minnesota. Darlyne resided at Morningside Heights Care Center for the last four and a half years. She was active with the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Darlyne was an avid pet lover, and she treasured all dogs and cats. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Darlyne and Wendell enjoyed many trips together, as well as going to casinos and concerts. They also enjoyed quiet time at Moon Lake.
She is survived by her sister Delayne Burke; daughter Kimberly (Raul) Planes of Rosemount; sons Chris Sims of California and Tracy (Heidi) Sims of Ramsey; step-children Linda (Richard) Nuytten of Minneota and Danny (Tracy) Larson of Minneota; grandchildren Corey Nielsen, Chris (Sarah) Sims, Tyler Sims, Afton Sims, Jess (David) Moriarty, Paul (Sarah) Nuytten, Rachel (Tim) Farrell, and Renee Larson; and great-grandchildren Marshall and Lennon Sims, Imogen, Padraic, and Rabent Moriarty, Ryder and Reese Nuytten.

John Albert Higginbotham (1948-2023) MN
Age 75, of Plymouth, MN passed away November 11, 2023. Preceded in death by parents and one sister, Susan Rosener.
John is a Navy Vietnam veteran who served in active duty on the USS Enterprise in southeast Asia.
John was an entrepreneur and business owner who helped build Pearl Baths, Inc. into a leading manufacturer of whirlpool tubs.
John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be greatly missed. John lived an extraordinary life filled with adventure, laughter, and love. John's fondest memories are times spent with his family fishing for the elusive walleye in northern Minnesota, boating, and anything hockey related. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Nancy; daughter Ellen (Mark), sons David, Ben (Karlie), and Alex; sister Mary Ellen Pinkham; brother Tom (Kim); a niece; two nephews; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on November 28th at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
