Howard F. Higinbotham (1864-1907) WI/NE

Howard Higinbotham, of this city, died after a brief illness at his room at the Lindell Hotel about 2 o'clock this morning. The direct cause of his death was heart failure brought on by serious lung trouble which had been affected for several years.

Mr. Higinbotham had been troubled with hemorrhages of the lungs on a number of occasions several months ago but during his connection with the real estate firm of Higinbotham & Pickens the past sixteen months his health had been such as to enable him to be out most the time looking after the business of the firm.

Last Wednesday while walking near the Brandes home he was taken with quite a severe hemorrhage and although he had been about the town since then up till yesterday afternoon, he was suffering without complaint, great pain.

Last night about 10 o'clock Dr. J.T. Steele was summoned to attend him at his room at the hotel but he was beyond medical aid. Mrs. Ann Higinbotham, mother of the deceased, resides at Sutton, where the family settled when they first came to Nebraska in 1874. There are two other surviving members of the family, Charles E. Higinbotham, of this city, and his sister, Mrs. Jessie B. Schaefle, residing at Oakland, California.

George Simpson Higginbotham (1870-1908) NE

Killed in Switch Yard

George Higginbotham Terribly Mutilated by Cars

Member of Camp Stotsenberg and Employee of Local Creamery Meets Death

George S. Higginbotham, shipping clerk of the Beatrice Creamery company, was killed in the Burlington yards some time between 4 and 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon. No one saw the accident but it is supposed that he was on top of a string of cars and fell between when there was a sudden jar. One hand was cut off and both legs severed above the knees. He died at Wilmeth’s hospital at 7:15 p.m.

Higginbotham had gone from his place of business to the Missouri Pacific yards to try to locate a car of coal that the creamery company had purchased. There had been a shortage of coal at the creamery and it seemed impossible to secure the transfer quickly from the Missouri Pacific tracks to the Burlington on which the creamery stands. It is supposed that he found the car about the time the switch engine started to make the transfer and climbed onto the string of cars that was being shunted about. The accident occurred after the transfer to the Burlington tracks had been made while the cars were in the north part of the yards between Ninth and Tenth streets.

Dr. Slattery was called. He was found in the northern part of the city and went direct to the scene of the accident. He did not have his surgical instruments with him and was forced to use the bell cord of the engine to bind the legs to stop the flow of blood. Higginbotham was not unconscious after the accident. He directed that his relatives be informed of the accident and that someone tell his wife. He also wanted to be taken to Wilmeth’s hospital. At the hospital Drs. Slattery, Mitchell and Wilmeth operated on him, taking off one of the mutilated legs. He was then found to be in so precarious a condition that the surgical work was stopped to see if he would rally. He never came out of the sinking spell, dying shortly after the operation on the one leg.

Mr. Higginbotham had been employed by the Beatrice Creamery company for seven years. He was a soldier in the Spanish American war, serving in the Philippines as a member of the First Nebraska volunteers. He was prominent in the organization of Camp Stotsenberg, Army of the Philippines, being at one time its commander and at all times identified with its prosperity.

Mr. Higginbotham lived at 1112 Rose street. He leaves a wife and four children, the youngest of whom was only four months old. He carried 10,000 insurance in two fraternal companies. He was thirty-seven years of age. It is likely that the funeral will be held Sunday. Arrangements for the services are in the hands of the members of Camp Stotsenberg, his comrades in the last war.

Learthea Higginbotham (1916-1933) NE

Death By Drowning

A tragic accident occurred at the sand pit about 3 1/2 miles northwest of Bellwood shortly after 9 o'clock Monday evening July 24, when Larethe Higginbotham, a 17-year-old Bellwood boy, met an untimely death. While wading in the sand pit he accidently stepped over the edge of a sudden drop-off and sank in water nearly 15 feet deep. Being unable to swim more than a few strokes, he was rendered helpless by the shock and failed to rise to the surface. He had been working and living at the home of Mrs. Adolph Yanike for several years. He had accompanied Walter Yanike and R. P. Ross and son Bob to the sand pit, and others going for a swim. Mr. Yanike had left the water and was on the bank dressing, having warned Larethe not to wade too far out. Mr. Ross and Bob were swimming some distance away. Bob saw Larethe go down, and calling to the others, he at once swam to the spot and in diving clutched Larethe's wrist, but was unable to raise him. Mr. Yanike and Mr. Ross exerted every effort for a few minutes to bring the boy to the surface, and then summoned aid. A number of men hurried to the spot to assist, but it was nearly two hours later before the body was brought to the surface by Tom Murphy, a young man from Springfield, Ill., temporarily employed on the Clyde Ellis farm.    A first-aid squad of Columbus firemen had been summoned and in cooperation with Dr. J. M. McNally of Bellwood worked for more than 1 1/2 hours in futile effort to resuscitate the lad, ceasing only when it was clearly evident that life was extinct.

Larethe was born at Bellwood Dec. 4, 1916, and the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Higginbotham. He is survived by his parents, one sister and five brothers. He was well liked by all and always did his part in helping his mother in efforts to maintain the home and give her children an education. The funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Bellwood M. E. Church by the pastor, Rev. J. C. Street. Paul Challstrom, Lester Fey, Lloyd Kamenske, James Powers and L. Rohrich were the pallbearers. Burial was in the Bellwood cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the family.

Jacquelyn Rae Higginbotham Ludwig (1938-2016) IA/NE

July 6, 1938 - September 14, 2016

Jacquelyn (Jackie) Rae Higginbotham was born July 6th, 1938 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was born at home, narrowly escaping death with the umbilical cord around her neck but she was born with the will to live. Her parents were Hugh Edwin Higginbotham and Florence Rebecca Stephens. She had one older sibling, Frankie Edwin Higginbotham. Jackie was proud of the fact that she came from a railroading family and her brother was a Marine. Florence was a traditional housewife of the time who gardened and sewed. As a girl Jackie invited Christ Jesus into her life and was baptized at Seventh Avenue Baptist Church. Later in life Jackie enjoyed a very close relationship with her Lord and Savior and spent many quiet hours praying for her friends and family. Jackie went to school at Abraham Lincoln HIgh School, leaving school early to marry Robert Ludwig and raise 3 children, Cindy Cay Sullivan (husband Ronald), Robert Bruce Ludwig (reunited with our Savior in 1963) and Mischelle Dana Hamawoo (Kokouga). As circumstances evolved, Jackie ended up becoming a single parent and raising her two daughters on her own. Jackie worked in various fields including banking, libraries and car dealerships. Jackie’s commitment to family continued as she became the only grandparent of her 4 grandchildren Robert Bruce, Timothy Jason, Ronald (Bucky) Lee and Amanda Cay Wallace. Leslie A. Hickenbottom Jr. (1928-2017) NE

Leslie A. “Bud” Hickenbottom, Jr. was born July 10, 1928, in rural Callaway, Nebraska, to Leslie Sr. and Anna (Lewis) Hickenbottom, the fifth of nine children. He passed from this life on Sunday, December 24, 2017, at the Callaway Good Life Center.

Bud lived his entire life in Callaway, Nebraska, except for his time in the United States Air Force from March 9, 1951, until his honorable discharge on February 7, 1959, where he was a staff sergeant, serving in Japan, Colorado and California, during the Korean War.

While serving in Colorado, he met and married the love of his life, Luella (Marie) Cadwallader. Following the military years, Bud and Marie moved their growing family back to Callaway, where they raised their five children. Bud farmed for most of his life, and after the children were raised, he and Marie began a new business venture, Bud and Marie’s Steakhouse, from which they both eventually retired.

Bud, always being a farmer, took over gardening after his wife of 44 years passed away on August 13, 2000. He enjoyed gardening, and had a sense of pride, when others asked him for advice. Bud was very proud of the years he served his country, and also of his son, Dean, and grandsons, David and Christian’s service in the Army. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, as well as playing pool, cards and dominoes.

Bud never knew a stranger. He had an amazing outlook on life and was known for his great sense of humor and turning frowns upside down. He will be remembered as one of Callaway’s “characters,” known and loved by Callaway residents of all ages and walks of life, as well as those from the neighboring towns.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife; four brothers, Donald, Alvin, Roger and James; three sisters, Dorothy (Lloyd) Edwards, Mildred Hickenbottom, and Laura (Palmer) Bybee; son-in-law, Rene Twohig; and a stillborn grandchild.

He is survived by his sons, Dean and Karen (Crow) of Spokane, Washington, and Mike and Stacy (Reier) of Cozad, Nebraska; daughters, Micki Twohig of Curtis, Nebraska, Terri and Joe Schierbeek of Rockvale, Colorado, and Cheryl and Lee Nielsen of Wood River, Nebraska; sister, Lois Franzen of Grand Island, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren, Lane Hickenbottom, Ryan Gibson, Monaca Brown, Shane Miller, Cody Milller, Chris Twohig, Jessica Crowder, Kayla Schierbeek, Kaleb Hickenbottom, Mallory Gibreal, Jordan Hickenbottom, Jennifer Raburn, David Nielsen, April Martin and Christian Nielsen; 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

It was Bud’s wishes his body be cremated. The family has honored those wishes. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held Friday, January 5, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Callaway Community Center with Fred Werkmeister, PMA officiating.
Inurnment with Military Honors will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway. Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home of Callaway is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jordan Lee Hickenbottom (1991-2021) NE
November 06, 1991 - August 19, 2021
Jordan L. Hickenbottom, formerly of Cozad, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 29. Jordan was born November 6, 1991, in Lexington, Nebraska, to Mike and Stacy (Reier) Hickenbottom. He graduated from Cozad High School with the class of 2010 before attending Southeast Community College in Lincoln.
Jordan lived in Lincoln, NE and later Tempe, AZ. In true Hickenbottom fashion, Jordan knew no strangers and quickly made strong connections wherever he went. His kind soul soaked up all his time in Arizona and bonded closely with his Arizona family and friends. Jordan returned to Nebraska, where he could be closer to his family, especially his niece Palmer, his pride and joy. Jordan was blessed to work with many friends in his short time here with us and was excited to be a part of the opening of the new Rosie’s Downtown Sports Bar and Grill.
Jordan's life, while undoubtedly too short, was lived to the absolute fullest. He was very generous with his time and his love. He cared about everyone and was upbeat about life. Jordan gave the best bear hugs and gave so much of his time, and always put family first. He was loved by every family member close and distant and reached out to them often. He loved surprising people with visits. Jordan had a huge heart and was very thoughtful. When you talked to Jordan, you could instantly tell you had his full attention. He loved you right back and never missed the chance to show you, whenever and where ever you saw him. He cared and loved so hard for so very many.
Jordan was an avid sports fan and a card-shark at pitch and poker. He was sharp-witted and his sarcasm was well-crafted. You just couldn’t help but laugh, smile and feel important to Jordan when he was with you. He loved being with family and friends. Some of his most cherished moments were when he surprised and celebrated others.
Jordan typically had a brightness in his eyes, an ornery smirk, and a goofy, fun-loving personality that had a way of drawing you in and keeping you there in his circle. Jordan had an effortless and endless amount of kindness and patience. Kids adored Jordan and flocked to this gentle giant. He could easily make friends with people of all ages. Jordan was generous in so many ways, always going to great lengths to think of and spend time with others. Jordan’s presence was a special one, cherished by many, and not soon forgotten. If Jordan was here to help plan, he would without a doubt want this to be a true celebration of his life. He loved you all.
Jordan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leslie (Bud) and Luella (Marie) Hickenbottom, and Charles (Dick) and Farrell Reier; aunt Marilyn Reier. Jordan is survived by his parents, Mike and Stacy of Cozad; siblings Kaleb (Raime Misko) Hickenbottom of Lincoln, Mallory (Ryan) Gibreal of Seward; niece, Palmer Hickenbottom; uncles Dean (Karen) Hickenbottom of WA , Jim (Nancy) Reier of Kearney, KaDon Reier of FL; aunts Terri (Joe) Schierbeek of CO; Cheryl (Lee) Nielsen of Wood River, and Micki Twohig of Gothenburg, along with many other cherished relatives and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family in his name for later designation. Services will be held Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cozad United Methodist Church with Pastor Kathy Gundell officiating. Burial will follow at Cozad Cemetery. Funeral service will be live streamed on Cozad United Methodist Church YouTube channel. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 25, 2021 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Berryman Funeral Home.
