Molendia Higginbotham Dunlap (1849-1895) IN/OK

Died - At her late home in Elm Grove Township, April 9, 1895, Mrs. Malina Dunlop, ager 46 years, 2 months and 4 days.
She was born in Indiana February 5, 1849, moved with her parents, B.B. and Mary Higginbotham, to Kolla, Missouri, and from thence to Kansas. She was married to Allan Dunlop February 20, 1870 and joined the Methodist Church in Longton, Kansas. She moved with her husband to this county in August 1889 and united with the United Brethren church at Elm Grove. She was a kind mother and an affectionate wife and loved by all who knew her. She leaves a husband and six children to mourn their loss.
The funeral service was preached by Brother Rutherford at the house, after which the remains were interred in Elm Grove cemetery.
The 1901 Higginbotham Murders
(The following article was written by Hugh D. Corwin, secretary of the
Great Plains Historical Association)
In the early days of this southwestern are there were many gunfights and
killings, but none that attracted more attention than a triple killings which
occurred Dec. 21, 1901, five miles northwest of the town of Sterling, Oklahoma
territory, in Comanche county.
Finus Berry, Fletcher, who was cowboy in the area at that time, learned of the
killings a few hours after they happened.
He and several other cowboys were rounding up cattle for their employer’s
preparing to move them to the "Big Pasture" in the south part of Comanche
county. As Mr. Berry relates the story: He and his co-workers were rounding up
strays for the cattle company. On the morning of Dec. 21, 1901, they saw a
settler named Standridge riding fast toward them. When he rode up Standridge
told them that he had just heard that three men were killed in a hay camp a
short distance to the west.
The men rode to the tent of a homesteader known as "Preacher Jackson," who
confirmed the story that three men had been shot and killed that morning. On
investigating, the group found the bodies of a Mr. Higginbotham and his two
sons, who had been bailing hay in the area all the fall of 1901.
The Higginbotham family had a homestead in the area west of Signal Mountain
where they made their home. The father and four sons were harvesting prairie hay
on the land east of the military reservation and selling it to the Army at Fort
Sill, according to Berry. Mrs. George Crane, of Lawton, then Miss Lora Hadley,
was a friend and neighbor of the Higginbotham family, they having been old
neighbors near Yukon, Okla., before moving to the area west of Signal Mountain.
Both Mrs. Crane and Walter P. South of Lawton, who was also a neighbor and later
a schoolmate of the younger Higginbothams, have furnished interesting bits of
history of this triple killing.
The evening of the day before the killing, John Roberts, a settler about 35
years of age, who was living in a tent with his wife and five year-old son, had
a quarrel and fight with Higginbotham and his three sons. As all accounts seem
to agree, the Higginbothams got the best of Roberts in the fight and his
revolver and a pair of "knucks" were taken from him by the Higginbothams.
Frank Novak, 91 year-old pioneer, on whose farm the first of the killings
occurred, relates the story: On the evening of Dec. 20, 1901, he and two
bachelor friends, Jim and Frank Dolezal, were in Novak's dugout home, about five
miles northwest of Sterling. During the evening John Roberts rode up on
horseback, called out and was invited in by Novak, who was a bachelor at the
time.
When Roberts entered the dugout the three friends were startled to see his face
was all bloody and he appeared to have been in a fight. Roberts told of the
quarrel and a fight a short time before between him and the Higginbothams over a
few bales of hay. As Mr. Novak recalls, Roberts said the oldest Higginbotham son
grabbed him from behind, pinned his arms and one of the brothers took his
revolver and "knucks", which he was carrying.
Mr. Higginbotham, the father, then stood in front of Roberts, threatening him
with a pitch fork, while one of the brothers proceeded to beat Roberts in the
face with his fists. After beating and threatening him, they let him go, keeping
his knucks and revolver.
Preacher Jackson, who lived near Novak, learned of the fight and he told Novak
and the Dolezals about the same story. Mrs. Roberts later told of her husband's
beating and that he walked the floor of the tent home all night brooding over
it. Next morning Roberts again came to Novak's dugout, where the three bachelor
friends were together, asking to borrow Frank Dolezal's shotgun, saying he had
seen a buck deer in the woods and believed he could shoot him. Novak says
Roberts was in the habit of borrowing the shotgun to kill deer and always
brought them part of the venison.
He asked for shells loaded with buckshot saying smaller shot wouldn't kill a
deer. they found only three shells with buckshot, which Roberts took and left on
his horse.
In a short time the three friends heard a shot and one remarked: "I guess John
has got his deer." But it soon occurred to them that he had no time to get to
the timber to find a deer so they went to investigate. About a quarter mile to
the east, on Novak's place, they found the body of one of the Higginbotham sons
who had been shot. About that time they heard another shot and Preacher Jackson
rode up, saying that Roberts was killing the Higginbothams.
Frank Novak says a hired hand of the Higginbothams witnessed the shooting of the
last of the three, and told it as follows: "The older Higginbotham son was
driving the hay baler and hid Roberts' revolver, which was a five-shot. As
Roberts rode toward him Higginbotham jumped off the baler, got down behind it
and began to shoot at Roberts, who dived off his horse to the ground, dodging
about until Higginbotham fired five shots, all missing their target. then
Roberts walked toward the young Higginbotham and shot him.
The youngest son, about 11 or 12 years old had gone ahead with the horse and
buggy, as they were moving their hay camp that day. This early start saved his
life.
Frank Novak says that after the shooting, Roberts went home to his tent, told
his wife what he had done, gathered up all the pictures of himself and destroyed
them, bid his wife and boy goodbye and rode west to Novak's dugout. Here he
handed back the borrowed shotgun with the statement: "I killed the three...one
after another. I guess you will never see me any more." With that, according to
Mr. Novak, he rode off toward the southwest in the direction of Lawton. Three
days later his pony was found tied in a post in the town of Marlow. So far as is
known, no one in this area ever saw him again.
Finus Berry and his cowboy friends picked up the bodies of the slain
Higginbothams and took them to Preacher Jackson's place. Someone went to
Sterling and notified the county authorities in Lawton, who came out the next
day and held an inquest. they took Mrs. Roberts and her son, holding her for
some time at the county jail, as a material witness. But as Roberts could not be
found, no trial could be held. Walter Smith and Finus Berry say Mrs. Roberts
cooked for the prisoners at the county jail for some time. Mr. Berry talked with
her on his visits in Lawton until some time after World War II, according to
Walter P. Smith, who knew her and her son.
John Roberts was said to be from Indiana. About 1903, Frank Novak says,
authorities in Indiana notified the sheriff at Lawton, they were holding a man
believed to be Roberts. County authorities here paid the train fare to there of
a neighbor of Roberts in an attempt to identify the suspect. He proved not to be
Roberts. There are no records of this case in the courthouse at Lawton, as all
territorial court records are stored at Ardmore and Guthrie.
The gun used in the killing was a 12 gauge, double barrel, New Ithaca shotgun
with 30 inch barrels. Many years ago Frank Dolezal left this gun with Frank
Novak, who used the gun occasionally in hunting. One day, while heading kefir
corn on his farm he put the gun on the dashboard of the wagon, and it fell off
and was run over, bending the barrels. Mr. Novak had it sawed off to its present
length of 18 inches. The gun has not been fired for many years. It is being
preserved as a relic of our rough and rugged past.

Lawton, Ok, Dec. 21 - John Roberts, G.N. Higganbotham and his two sons Oliver
and Ed were putting up hay on shares, twenty-two miles northwest of Lawton.
Thursday night Roberts attacked the Higganbotham boys with a pair of brass
knuckles. The Higginbothams disarmed him, taking his revolver and knuckles from
him. Roberts borrowed a shotgun, saying he was going deer hunting and met the
youngest of the Higganbotham boys on his road to Lawton with a load of hay.
Roberts shot him in the back. He then went farther along the trail and met G. N.
Higginbotham who was watching his oldest son coming up the trail. Roberts shot
him also in the back and then the eldest son rushed up and was trying to raise
his father, he, too, was host. The boy had a revolver taken from Roberts the
night before and opened fire. Roberts waited until he had fired three shots and
then walked up to the wounded man and killed him. There were four witnesses to
the tragedy. Roberts mounted his horse rode down to the camp, bade his wife
good-by and left. Kansas City Star.
G. N. Higganbotham was the only living brother of Mrs. I. J. Davis of this city.
He was one of the early settlers of this county, coming here in 1866 and
locating east of town. He married Miss Nancy Weaver whose home was on the farm
now occupied by M. Herman in east Mission. In 1881 they moved to Meade County,
Kansas, and remained there until a few months ago. Mr. Higganbotham drew a claim
last August and later moved to it. He resided on his claim when the above sad
catastrophe occurred. His two sons, Ed and Oliver, who were also killed by
Roberts, were 22 and 19 years old respectively. Ed was born in East Mission, but
was little child when his parents moved from here.

J. M. Higginbotham, who was run over and crushed Thursday afternoon while helping his son drive a pair of spirited mules down a hill south of Lawrence and was brought here for treatment died of his injuries at 8:20 this morning. His family arrived from Roff this morning at 10:30. The body will be interred at Rosedale at 5 p.m. this afternoon. Rev. D. J. Austin will conduct the funeral services.

an automobile accident at Southwest Fifty-sixth street and Walker avenue Monday,
will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Capitol Hill funeral home. She will be
buried in Sunny Lane cemetery.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Higginbotham, 2120 Southwest
Twenty-sixth street. She was killed almost instantly when the car in which she
was riding crashed into an oil truck.

W. C. Higginbotham, 72 years old, a retired farmer, was found dead of a
heart ailment Sunday morning at the home of a son, Paul Higginbotham, 629
Southeast Thirty-fifth street.
Higginbotham, a resident of the state since 1903, settled at Coweta. Later he
lived near Manford and then at Sapulpa, coming here from the latter about three
years ago.
Other survivors include three sons, Luther, Pasadena, Calif.; Fred, Graham,
Texas, and Zim of Broken Arrow; and four daughters, Mrs. Winnie Vance, Tulsa;
Mrs. Sophia Whitaker, city; Mrs. Edith Tichenor, city, and Mrs. Bertha Norton,
Dorrance, Kan.
Services have been tentatively set for Monday afternoon in the Hunter chapel.
Burial probably will be Tuesday in the Duck Creek cemetery four miles east of
Mounds.

Matilda Higginbotham Arnold (1852-1940) KY/OK
State Pioneer, Resident Here 18 Years, Dies
Mrs. Matilda Arnold To Be Buried Monday At Crescent
Mrs. Matilda Higginbotham Arnold, 88 years old, an 89'er and a resident of the city 18 years, died Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. A. W. Hedge, 217 1/2 Harrison Avenue, following an illness of five months.
Mrs. Arnold and her husband, Isaac B. Arnold, who died here about two years ago, came to Guthrie from Garden City, Kan., where he had been sheriff. He operated the first carriage shop at Guthrie and later was both a blacksmith and a farmer.
The couple had been married 63 years at the time of his death, celebrating their anniversary in 1938. She was a member of the Christian church.
Also surviving are four other daughters, Mrs. W.D. Baggett, Galveston, Texas, Mrs. Ella Bowden, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hetsch, both of Guthrie, and Mrs. Mary Stumpff, El Reno; two sons, Joe B. Arnold, Guthrie, and Walter B. Arnold, 1205 Northeast Tenth Street; a foster son, Earl Calhoun, Wichita, Kan., and 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Rites will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday an the First Christian Church at Guthrie. Burial will be at Crescent.

Funeral services for Luther Frank "Frank" Higginbotham, 50, who died at his home here early, Sunday morning, March 23, 1941, will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Wagoner First Christian Church. He was born September 2, 1890. Services will be conducted by the Rev. J. E. McCoy, pastor, assisted by the Rev. J. Edwin Kerr, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of the Hersman Funeral Home. Mr. Higginbotham for the past four years has served as superintendent of the City of Wagoner utilities, being appointed to that position immediately following compromise settlement of the long drawn out Fairbanks-Mose Co. suit against the city, involving the municipal light plant. Mr. Higginbotham had returned to his office only on the Friday before his death, following his return a week before from a Muskogee hospital where he had been taken February 26 following recurrence of a condition which had forced hospitalization early in January. Both times a series of operations were performed to relieve pressure of a blood clot affecting the brain. Besides his wife and daughter, Wanda Jean, of the home, Mr. Higginbotham is survived by two sisters; Mrs. R. O. Silvers of Louisa, Kentucky and Mrs. Charles Peters, of the Balboa Canal zone and three brothers; Henry, Brooklyn, New York, Ed, Greensboro, North Carolina and Wayne. Serving as pallbearers will be Walter Cleckler, W.E. Wood, W.H. Clow, Cecil Beard, Louis Waldon and John Moore.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Billie Anderson, 18, and Bennie Higginbotham, 24, Ada youths who were killed early Sunday morning when the car in which they were riding overturned four miles west of Sulphur.

Higginbotham was shot three times, once each in the left
side, the lung and the abdomen, and died about five hours after being brought to
the hospital here. Webb Burns, Boswell constable, was shot once in the left hip

According to the story told County Attorney Ralph K. Jenner by Burns, J.N. (Jab) Higginbotham was “pretty drunk and his son, Van, was drinking” when the Boswell officers asked Van to take his father home to avoid his arrest. The son put his father into his truck and started to get in himself, then apparently changed his mind. The officers threatened to arrest both men, but Van Higginbotham resisted saying, “No, you aren’t going to arrest me,: and a general fight ensued in which the elder Higginbotham, his son, Van, and the latter’s son, Franklin, all took part with pocket knives.
While being taken to Boswell jail, Van Higginbotham pulled out his pocket knife and Welch drew his gun, warning his assailant to stop. The two men grappled for the officer’s gun, which went off, hitting Webb Burns, who was standing several feet away.
At this time, both Jab Higginbotham and Franklin Higginbotham again entered the melee with knives and Burns shot several times and is believed to have hit Van Higginbotham.
Jenner said Sunday that x-rays were being made to determine the gun from which bullets entered his body.
Funeral services for Higginbotham had not been completed.
Survivors are his father, his wife and son; three brothers, Cul Higginbotham, in
Hugo, Okla.-Funeral services were set for Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Boswell Cemetery for Van Higginbotham, 39, The Rev. Jinks Goodwin, Holiness minister officiating, and Coffey Funeral Home making interment.
Higginbotham died early Sunday of wounds received in an altercation Saturday with Boswell officers. He was born in Boswell, Nov. 6, 1905.
Survivors include his wife and one son, Franklins, 16; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Higginbotham, a sister, Mrs. Lola Mock, Boswell; and three brothers, Cul Higginbotham, Brentwood, Calif., Walker Higginbotham, Oklahoma City, and Buster Higginbotham, Soper.

Fairland, Okla., Oct. 23 - John Edwin Higenbotham, 71 years old, a lifelong resident of the county, died at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon in Miami Baptist Hospital. Surviving are his widow Mrs. Grace Higenbotham; a son, Ralph Higenbotham, of Fairland; four daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Harris and Mrs. Belwia Crafton of Fairland, Mrs. Marjorie Stevens of North Miami and Miss Wanda Higenbotham of Galveston, Tex.; a brother, Ralph Higenbotham of Landa, Wyo.; three half-brothers, George Cooksey of Poque, Kan., David Cooksey of Grainfield, Kan., and Ben Cooksey of Fairland; two step-children of the home, and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Hickory Grove church, south of here. The Rev. John Elliott and the Rev. G.A. Brannon will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of the Cooper funeral home.

Woodward-Funeral for Mrs. Rosa Lucile Higginbotham, 45, will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Assembly of God church.
She died Monday evening in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Naomi Baxter, following and extended illness. Mrs. Higginbotham was born in Lugert, July 21, 1906, and moved to Woodward when a child. She lived here until 1943 when she moved to Carter.
She is survived by her husband, Walter; two sons, Floyd and Jerry Barnett, of the home in Carter; two daughters, Mrs. Baxter and Mrs. Beatrice Bratcher; her mother, Mrs. E.A. Smith; a sister, Mrs. John Barnett; and four grandchildren, all of Woodward.

The wife of Keldon W. Wilds, operator of a greenhouse across the street from the family home. She died Thursday night from cancer at Deaconess hospital. She was born in Daylight, Tenn., and came to Oklahoma about 16 years ago. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, LaDonna, 6, and Hilda Ruth, 2. Also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. TAHLEQUAH (AP) - James Higginbotham, 15-year-old Fort Smith, Ark., boy drowned late yesterday in the Illinois River east of Tahlequah where he was swimming with five other teenagers.
Officers said Higginbotham never came up after diving into the river from the Standing Rock Bridge on State Highway 82. His body was recovered.

Higginbotham was born in Coleman and came to Oklahoma City eight years ago. He was a postal employee for 12 years.
Higginbotham was active in youth work and worked with the little league baseball program and the Moore High School ROTC program for five years. He was retired from the military and was the first noncommissioned officer to be president of the youth council at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. Higginbotham was a member of Pearl Harbor Vets, the VFW and the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors are his wife, Mary; two sons, Danny, El Reno, and Brad, of the home; one daughter, Sandra, of the home; one brother, James, Portland, Ore.; one sister, Mrs. Billie Shiels, Portland; his grandmother, Mrs. J.S. Higginbotham, Portland, and one granddaughter.

HIGGINBOTHAM-- Robert Emmet, born August 8, 1911 in Van Buren, IN, died at St. Francis Hospital on January 28, 1998 after a brief illness. He was the son of Robert Paul Higginbotham and Nora Hehir Higginbotham. He lived in Tulsa for more than 70 years. He graduated from Holy Family High School in 1927. He received his bachelor's degree from St. Benedict's College in Atchison, KS and his law degree from the University of Tulsa Law School. During his career he worked for Texaco, Williams Brothers Pipeline, OMR Pipeline and Sunray; he retired as comptroller from Explorer Pipeline in 1976. He was one of the founding members of the Church of the Madalene parish and more recently was a member of St. Mary's Catholic parish. He was a member of the National Association of Cost Accountants and the Madalene Men's Club. She was born July 2, 1945, in Hardtner, Kan., to Ray "Doc" and Doris Doctor, and
died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at St. Anthony's Hospital, Oklahoma City.
She graduated from Alva High School in 1963 and earned a bachelor's degree in
business from Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
In 1968, she married David Bouziden. They lived near Ashland, where they farmed
and ranched. She worked as executive secretary to the administrator in Woodward
Hospital for 12 years.
On Aug. 1, 1992, she married Joe Higginbotham at Alva. They lived in New York
City and Memphis, Tenn., before moving to Oklahoma City in 1995. While in
Memphis, she was a full-time Volunteer at St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Surviving are her husband, Joe of Oklahoma City; one son, Rhett Bouziden of
Oklahoma City; one daughter, Leslie Bouziden of Ashland, Kan.; her mother, Doris
Healan of Alva; one brother, Doug Doctor of Alva; one half-brother, John
Noffsinger of Denver; and one grandson.

HIGGINBOTHAM Willis Reeves, 75, of OKC, passed away July 15, 2002. He was born Dec. 29, 1926 in Flomont, TX to Willis and Mary Higginbotham. He proudly served his country in the Army through WWII during the occupation of Japan. He graduated Texas Tech University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, later working for Phillips Petro. Co. for 35 years before retiring. On August 28, 1948, Willis married Annie Mae Graham, and started their family. He loved music and singing in the choir at Asbury Methodist Church where he was a member for many years. He is preceded in death by his wife and parents. Sylvia M. Harris, retired nurse's aide, died August 30, 2002 after a sudden illness. She was 90. She was born Feb. 12, 1912 at Fairland to John Higinbotham and Lottie (Blalack) Higinbotham. She was proud of her Cherokee heritage. She worked as a housekeeper for several years, and as a nurse's aide at Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami for 17 years. She married John "Bud" Harris, Jr. on September 4, 1931. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1951. She was a lifetime member of First Assembly of God Church in Fairland, where she still faithfully attended. She is survived by: five daughters, Retha Jean Gabriel and Margie Fay Casey, both of Grove, Shirley Ann DeLong and Delores Mae Artherton and husband, Richard, all of Bouse, Ariz., and Norma Lee Redington of Miami; a brother, Ralph Higinbotham, of Seneca; two sisters and their husbands, Belva and Jack Crafton of Fairland, and Wanda and Alfred Anderson of Freeport, Texas; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, at First Assembly of God Church in Fairland with Rev. Jackie Crafton, Jr., and Rev. Robert Jackson officiating. Burial followed at Hickory Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jack Manning, Kenneth Whisner, Jackie Crafton, Jim Bryant, Charles Griffin, Roger Selsor, and Keith Hinson. moved to Sweeney and Midland, Texas, where he worked as a petroleum engineer. In
1949, they returned to Alva and operated Texaco Service Center, a mobile home
towing service and wrecker service until retirement. She obtained a bachelor's
degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State College. She was an active member of
First United Methodist Church and was a past president of Women's Society of
Christian Service of the church. She was a member of National Honor Society,
Delta Zeta Sorority, 20th Century Club, Iris Garden Club and an organization of
women known as The Campers. She was awarded two national service awards.
Surviving are one son, John of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Suzanne Kurth of
Angleton, Texas; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 31, 1989, and four brothers.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Judes Children's Research
Hospital.

Dorothy C. Higginbotham, 77, of Norman died Tuesday, Feb. 22, from
complications of heart surgery in Oklahoma City. A rosary service will be at 7
p.m. today at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel in Norman. Mass of Christian burial
will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Edward
Menasco officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Rosedale Cemetery in Ada.
Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman is handling arrangements. Dr. Higginbotham was
born March 4, 1927, in Ada, to Lee and Louise (Berntsen) Higginbotham. She
attended Ada Public Schools and graduated from East Central State University.
She received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Early in her
career she taught at Beggs High School and Duncan High School. After receiving
her doctorate she taught communication and language development at Southeastern
State University in Durant, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and the
University of Oklahoma. Dr. Higginbotham was associate dean emeritus of the
College of Arts and Sciences at OU. She served on the OU Credit Union Board. She
volunteered as a docent at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History
after she retired. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Norman and served on many committees. Dr. Higginbotham was preceded in death by
her parents; sister Pauline; and brothers Clifton, Benny and Bob. Dr.
Higginbotham is survived by her sisters Idalee Dickey of Houston, Nadine Wright
of Norman, Betty Sealman of Denver, Melody Kruger and husband Noel of Oklahoma
City and Kay Davis and husband Frank of Guthrie; and many nieces, nephews,

died June 3, 1976, at Casper, Wyo. Mrs. Higginbotham was the owner of
Higginbotham Reality, Casper, for 30 years. She was the president of Casper
Board of Realtors, and a member of the Casper MLS. Mrs. Higginbotham was an
elder at the First Presbyterian Church, Casper.
Survivors include her three daughters, Becky Kubiak and husband Buddy,
Arlington, Kristy Smith and husband Dr. Mike Smith, Tulsa, Okla.; and Laurie
Mitchell and partner Ray Chaney, McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, David Hegranes,

Beulah Bell (Tipton) Meyers, age 78, went to be with her Lord
and Savior on Friday, March 27, 2009 at her home in Oklahoma City. She was born
March 31, 1930 at Boggy Depot, OK to Embrey and Josie (Strutton) Higginbotham
and grew up at Coleman, OK. She attended Coleman Schools, and, after marriage,
lived much of her younger adult life in various towns in Southeast Oklahoma. She
moved with her family to Del City in 1962 and lived there until moving to her
present home in 1985. Beulah worked for several years for Rosebud Cleaners and
later for the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. She was a member of Calvary
Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by her parents her first
husband, Earnie Tipton three brothers, J.B., Jack and Earl as well as one
sister, Lillian. Survivors include her husband, Harry (Hubcap) Meyers, of the
home and daughters, Carolyn Joy Greeson of Del City, Karen Lynn Riley and
husband Mike of Del City, and Sharon Leeann Smith and husband Tim of Sanford, CO
also by seven grandchildren: Patti, Melissa, Kasey, Kelly, Kerry, Patricia and
Michael eight great- grandchildren and three sisters: Vearlene Gallagher, JoAnn
Sharp and Loretta Steward. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be

Higginbotham; children Mike and Stefanie Higginbotham, Teena and Ken Shields and Lynne and Floyd Lollis; grandchildren Maggie, Andrew and Kadie Higginbotham and Travis an Rachelle Lollis; and great-grandchildren Ethan and Aidan Lollis; as well as two sisters, Frances Davis and Ruth Daneshmayah. She will be remembered and missed by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. John Christopher Higginbotham was born 5-7-49 in Globe, Arizona and went home to be with the Lord 5-25-2011. John was loved and will be remembered by his daughter Charity Chansombath and her husband Nick, his daughter Andrea Pope and her children Allie and Riley as well as Todd Grantz and his son Brent Higginbotham. He was well respected and will be missed by Nancy & Scott Wetmore, the Heuargsayaserg family, the Duangvilay family, the Chansombath family, and the Brown family. John above all loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was also an avid outdoorsmen and loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He had an appreciation for all of nature but especially loved birds and flowers. In looking through his Bible we found several phrases that he had written and we would like to share a few of them. “Just one life, ‘twil soon be past; Only what’s done for Christ will last.” (Dr. Lee Roberson) “People may doubt what you say but they will always believe what you do.” (S. Ward) “Every man I meet is in some way my superior; and in that I can learn of him” (Emerson). “Freedom is not the right to do as you please but the liberty to do as you ought.” (John R Rice) John fought hard to survive but ultimately could not overcome the complications that arose from his open heart surgery. We miss him more than anything but we are able to take comfort in the fact that when he passed, he had a smile on his face. We love you Dad!

Higginbotham, 96, of Robert Lee, Texas, formerly of Chickasha will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Augusta L. Allen Higginbotham was born November 19, 1914, in Union Hill, Oklahoma, the daughter of Dan R. Allen and Vicie Franks Allen. She died Saturday, October 22, 2011, in Robert Lee, Texas. Augusta grew up in the Chickasha area graduating from Chickasha High School in 1932. Later she went on to Hills Business College where she studied bookkeeping. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and also served in the Cradle Role Department at First Baptist Church in Chickasha. Later she was employed at Sears and Roebuck in Odessa, Texas, and was a member of the Robert Lee Baptist Church where she was in the T.E.L. class. In her spare time she enjoyed playing bingo, spending time with her family and cooking large meals. She married James Higginbotham on August 17, 1951, in Chickasha. She was preceded in death by both parents; husband James; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dan and Vera Allen and Chester and Nelly Allen; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Alice Allen, A.O. and Edna Hill, and Bill and Della Cogan; and two nephews, Mearl Allen and Chet Allen. She passed away Monday June 11, 2012 at Sulphur, Oklahoma at the age of 72 years 7 months and 15 days. She was married to Don Lancaster in 1961. He preceded her in death in 2011. She grew up in Ardmore where she attended school. She had lived in Sulphur the past 42 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Micki Lynn Sweeten, a sister Shirley Keeton. James Higginbotham, age 83 of Purcell, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the Sunset Estates Nursing Home. James was happily living in Purcell, Oklahoma for the last 21 years. Purcell has been good to us and we became easily accepted. Before that we lived at Ponca City, where James was supervisor of the tank farm at the Conoco Refinery for 17 years. During our 40 years with Conoco we made many company moves and they were very good to us. These moves took us to many adventurous places which seemed like sightseeing adventures. James was moved to Shattuck, Oklahoma in June 1949 by Conoco. That many years ago – we now see that God brought him to Shattuck for a reason. He helped my daddy so much and he was quickly loved by my parents and all the Schoenhals family. With all the good things God did for us and what we believe, James was welcomed by our parents on that Sunday afternoon, September 29, 2013 when he left this world. We were all with him and he was breathing nicely, and then stopped. Hospice was also with us so we were comfortable with these happenings. We definitely believe “everything happens for the best” as God says. James and Betty were the first couple to be married in the new Ebenezer Baptist Church in Shattuck on February 11, 1950, when it was moved from the country. The church wasn’t completed so they had folding chairs and very little else. All went so well. We left the church and moved to El Reno. We had two sons, Michael and Alan. And we claim Ginger, Alan’s wife who followed him with all his moves as he also worked for Conoco. Michael lives in Richmond, Virginia with our Grandson and Alan lives in Seguin, Texas, east of San Antonio. Alan and Ginger have one daughter, Jessica who lives in California with her husband and our three great granddaughters. We were going to the Johnson Road Baptist Church at Purcell. We again think God had a hand in this. As it happens, Preacher Brown, from Johnson Road Baptist Church went to ministerial school in New Orleans and his first church was a small county church outside Fargo, which is very near Shattuck. God’s planning for our life was the best. Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Shattuck, OK under the direction of Carl Mason Funeral Home in Shattuck. Burial will follow at the Shattuck Memorial Cemetery. CHICKASHA Nadine Wright, 96, died in Norman, OK July 6, 2015. She was born March 12, 1919, in Ada, OK to Lee and Louise Higginbotham. Nadine graduated from Ada HS and attended East Central University. In 1940, she married Carl Wright. After marriage, they lived in Ada and had two children, Bruce and Debbie. They later moved to Chickasha, where they lived for 50 years. Nadine worked in the business office of USAO. After retiring, she enjoyed reading, travel, and she was an excellent bridge player. She also was known for her wonderful peanut brittle. Nadine was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; and six brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, Bruce Wright and his wife Lori, of Norman; a daughter, Debbie Hardie and her husband Hugh, of Sperry; and also by three sisters, Betty Sealman, of Denver; Melody Kruger, of Oklahoma City; and Kay Davis, of Guthrie. Nadine was "Dutchess" to nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Ray Heginbotham age 82, of Catoosa, Oklahoma, He was born in Scottsville,
Kentucky on September 30, 1932 to Minnie and William Heginbotham and passed away
Friday, August 21, 2015 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
With his father being a minister he traveled a lot with his family in his
earlier years and later graduated from Perkins High School in 1950. He then
joined the U. S. Army and proudly served in Korea. He was honorably discharged
in October of 1953.
Ray met Allie "Bea" (Rhines) on a blind date in Dallas, Texas, six months later
he proposed to her over the telephone. Bea immediately secured a ticket and road
a bus to Denver where he lived and they married on December 18, 1954 in Las
Vegas, New Mexico. They made their home in Denver, Colorado for a while before
moving to Tulsa and then settling in Catoosa.
He is survived by his wife Bea of the home, two sons Ronnie Heginbotham and his
wife Dana of Hulbert, OK and Earl Ray Heginbotham of Tulsa, one daughter Regina
Stamper and her husband Stephen of Verdigris, OK, two brothers Roy Heginbotham
and his wife Wanda of Choctaw, OK and James Heginbotham and his wife Merlene of
Catoosa, OK, three grandchildren Dax Heginbotham, Dayna Marie Miller and her
husband Kevin and Ronna Elaine Heginbotham , five great-grandchildren Dakota and

They raised four children who were a part of that ministry. He spent the last 30 years of his life with his family as a missionary to Native Americans. NORMAN After 85 years of a full life, Bill went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 13, 2017. The son of Paul & Juanita Higginbotham, he was born January 14, 1932 in Ada, Oklahoma. After graduating from Capitol Hill H.S in 1950 he began a career in the oil field working his way up through the ranks (starting as a Tool Dresser and High Derrick Man with Clark Well Servicing) until in the 1950's he purchased a `junk' rig and working it himself with his dad, Paul, he began his own business that later became Capitol Well Servicing, Co. He also owned and operated Oklahoma Tank Service and Trico Drilling. August 4, 1956, he married Betty Walker and together they raised their children in Oklahoma City and Norman. Following Betty's death, Bill was fortunate to find love again and married Janie Whitley of Selma, North Carolina 29 years ago. Bill was a charter member and actively involved in Southern Hills Church of God his whole life until Parkinsons impaired his mobility over the past few years. He also served on the Board of Directors for Lee University (Cleveland, TN) for 30+ years. In his free time Bill enjoyed good food (anything Charlestons, Chocolate Almond Ice Cream, Butterfinger Blast, or anything anyone else was eating) an afternoon nap (as well as morning or evening naps), playing golf, boating, swimming and fishing on Lake Eufaula, playing cards, cheering for the Sooners and probably most of all sharing a laugh with friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Juanita Higginbotham, and his wife of 32 years, Betty in 1988; He leaves behind his loving family: wife, Janie, sons, Larry Steidley & wife Glenna (Claremore), Will Higginbotham & wife Chris, Gary Higginbotham & wife Tammy, daughter Melinda & husband Mark Green, sisters Paula Wingo & husband Jiggs, Margie McCalister (Chattanooga, TN), 6 grandchildren Robert Steidley, Whitney Hemphill & husband Scott, Megan Tompkins, Kaitlyn Clarke & husband Kevin, Claire Ruth & husband Bobby, and Jake Higginbotham, 5 great-grandchildren Lily, Locke, and Levi Hemphill, Chandler Elizabeth Ruth and Robbie Steidley. Bill was truly blessed in his lifetime in so many ways: the favor of God was evident in his life. At one point Capitol Well Servicing and Oklahoma Tank Service were the largest privately owned oil field servicing company in Oklahoma. His prayers usually began with truly humble thanksgiving "Lord thank you for all of your many blessings in our lives?" and Bill was not selfish with the blessings he received. He was truly one of the most generous people many had ever known. As his granddaughter, Megan said, Bill "made the most of his time here and will be missed by so many." We were blessed by his presence among us, the example he set for us and the legacy he leaves behind. May we carry the best in him forward as we take the torch. Following Mr. Smith's military service, they made their home in Borger and later in Oklahoma City. They came to Bartlesville to make their home in 1958 and then lived in Kansas City, Kansas for four years until returning to Bartlesville. Mrs. Smith began working at the Examiner-Enterprise in Bartlesville in 1975 and became the Women's writer in 1975 and then served as the Lifestyle Editor from 1983 until her retirement in 1986. She had served 15 years of volunteer service with the Girl Scouts and was a member of City Church. She liked to play bridge, Mahjong and enjoyed quilting. She also attended the 55+ Activities Center. Conita Mae Higginbotham - or Connie as she was known - was born the daughter of Con and Vina (Conwell) Higginbotham on Sept. 20, 1931, in Iola, KS. She was raised in Iola and participated in cheerleading, choir, 4-H and drama, graduating from Iola High School In 1949. Connie attended one year at Iola Junior College before moving to Bartlesville to work at Phillips Petroleum Co. Connie loved to sing and was on the Phillips Water Ballet team. On Sept. 13, 1951, Connie had just finished singing jazz at a local club before heading over to a dance at the YMCA where she met Bill who was stationed in Bartlesville with the Air Force. They quickly fell in love and married on Jan. 6, 1952, and made their home in Bartlesville. Once the kids were older Connie started work with the Bartlesville Public Schools in the cafeteria, retiring after 10 plus years of service. Once retired Bill and Connie moved over to Grand Lake where they enjoyed entertaining the grandchildren and wintered in Port Isabel, TX. In 2009 they moved back to Dewey. Connie loved animals and always had dogs which she loved to train and show. One special golden retriever, April, won Grand Champion in obedience and confirmation. Connie loved her family, supporting her children and grandchildren in their many activities over the years, and they loved her dearly. Connie is survived by her two children Cynthia Lynn Blake and Brent of Lenexa, KS, and Mike Grimes and Robi of Wann; one brother Steven Higginbotham of Bartlesville; two sisters, Billie Frame of Bartlesville, and Linda Guenther and Melvin of Iola; six grandchildren Stacy Miller and Aaron, Tiffany Arnold and Rusty, Abbey Grimes, Carter Grimes, McKinley Grimes and Laura Davito; six great grandchildren Oliva, Kennedy, Blake, Avery Grace, Beck and Vera; and nieces Debbie, Chris, Cathy, Kellie and Sherri. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband of 63 years, Bill. Connie's family will receive friends at the Davis Family Funeral Home – Dewey Chapel, 918-534-3030, 113 S. Osage (Hwy. 75), Dewey, on Sunday, Oct. 7, from 3-5. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Washington County SPCA, 16620 Hwy 123, Bartlesville, OK 74003. Funeral services will take place Monday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. at the Davis Family Funeral Home - Dewey Chapel, with Chaplin Jsue Wagner officiating. Interment will follow in the Dewey Cemetery. Betty Charlene Hemby of Heavener, Oklahoma was born January 7, 1932 in Zoe, Oklahoma to Charles and Delphia (Breeding) Higginbotham and passed away February 15, 2019 in Heavener, Oklahoma at the age of 87. She is survived by: Two daughters: Caren Ridenour of Heavener, Oklahoma Jeri Soto and husband Pete of Middleburg, Florida One brother: Jerry Gillham of Howe, Oklahoma Six grandchildren 12 great-grandchildren Two great-great-grandchildren Several other loved ones and host of friends She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jessy LeRoy Hemby. Edna was born October 25, 1941 at Roswell, New Mexico to Cecil Browning Higginbotham and Rachel Virginia (Brooks) Higginbotham. She passed from this life on January 4, 2020 in Ardmore at the age of 78. She was a lifelong resident of this area. Edna enjoyed gardening, reading (especially Louis L’Amour, Stephen King, Dean Koontz and John Le Carrie) cooking for family, softball and basketball when she was in school and spending time with her family. She drove the bus for Sunshine Industries for many years and was a homemaker. She was Assembly of God.

Janie Whitley Owens Higginbotham (1937-2020) NC/OK

NORMAN - Janie Whitley Higginbotham, formerly a longtime resident of Norman, OK, passed away in her residence at The Veraden Living Center from the effects of Alzheimer's disease. Janie was born and raised in Selma, NC to Jesse and Esther (Capps) Whitley, where she was the third child of four daughters and one son: Jean Whitley, Joan Frye, Grace Coates, Joyce Wright, and Willard Whitley. Janie was raised on a farm, which instilled in her a hard work ethic, which lasted a lifetime. Janie was an active member of Selma First Baptist Church, where she was always willing to cook or decorate for various occasions. Janie was always willing to help a friend in need. Janie gave birth to her only son, Randy Glen Owens, Nov. 15, 1955. Randy was the light of her life. Randy passed away Nov. 9, 1957, at 2 years old from spinal meningitis. Grief consumed Janie for many years. In 1988, Janie met Bill Higginbotham, who was dragged into her office by a mutual friend. Bill had been grieving the death of his wife since her diagnosis of cancer several years prior. After a whirlwind romance, I believe they both saw a chance to be released from their grief, and they wasted no time in grabbing an opportunity for happiness. Janie married Bill, left her beloved NC where Randy was buried and moved to Bill's hometown. Janie thrived in her new life in Norman, OK. She jumped into every aspect of Bill's life, including his home, church and family. Janie loved cooking and taking care of their home and had wonderful friends in the neighborhood. Janie jumped into Southern Hills Church of God, where together, they celebrated their love for the Lord and volunteered endlessly. Janie inherited a family that she embraced as her own. Melinda wrote, "She usually had candy in her pockets or goodies of some sort when the grandchildren were young. She was a world class spoiler of children and they loved her for it. Later, as they grew up, she challenged the family to be their best – sometimes even when not receptive." Claire Higginbotham Ruth described her as "sassy." She said, "Nana took no crap and always spoke her mind but yet she could be soft and loving." Whitney Higginbotham Hemphill said, "Janie was a force. She was one of the strongest, most independent, most outspoken and most capable women I have ever had the privilege of knowing and loving. She was a rock in an unsteady childhood. One of the very best southern cooks I've ever seen, had one of the best accents you'd ever heard and the biggest heart to hold you in." The family would like to thank friends, doctors and loved ones who helped Janie throughout her battle with Alzheimer's. We thank her caregivers, whom Janie loved like family, Novlan Reader, Shelle Reader, Phyllis Reader, Crystal White, Chrystal Davis, Jeannie Hudson, Janet Pineda, Jiwon Golightly, and especially, Shelle and Phyllis, who continued to care for Janie during her last months in Memory Care. We know Janie has already joined Bill and her son, Randy, in heaven. We look forward to a Celebration of Life ceremony to be held at a later date, when family and friends can embrace. Steven "Steve" Edward Higginbotham, age 71, of Bartlesville passed away on May 6, 2020 at St John Medical Center in Tulsa. Steve was born on August 13, 1948 in Iola Kansas to Con and Vina Higginbotham. He grew up in Carlyle Kansas graduated from Iola High School in 1966 and then went Iola Jr. College. He worked several jobs but mostly in the oil fields. Before moving to Oklahoma, he was in the grocery business. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Connie Grimes and her husband Bill and his niece Traci Frame. Steve is survived by sister Billie Frame of Bartlesville and sister Linda and husband Mel Guenther of Carlyle Kansas. He has five nieces and one nephew. Cynthia Grimes Blake, Michael Grimes, Christina Guenther Dutcher, Kelley Frame Rodgers, Catherine Guenther Evans, Sherri Frame. Also, several great nieces and nephews. He is to be buried at the Highland Cemetery in Iola Kansas and a family service will be held at a later date.

Beverly Kay Higginbotham, 61, of Mannsville, Okla., passed away Dec. 4, 2020, at her home in Mannsville. She was born on July 4, 1959, in Madill, Okla., to Jimmy Luther Edwards and Elizabeth Bernice Walling Edwards. Beverly was raised in the Russett and Mannsville area and graduated in 1977 from the Dickson High School. Beverly lived most of her life on Greasy Bend area and she enjoyed reading, drawing, painting, writing poetry and working in her garden.
She is survived by Daughter: Caitlin Vanet and husband Jason, Mannsville; Father: Jimmy Luther Edwards and wife Lucy Elizabeth, Madill; Mother: Elizabeth Bernice Furrh; Sister: Anita Collins, Ardmore.
Beverly was preceded in death by her grandfather: Luther B. Edwards; grandmother: Gertrude Edwards; grandmother: Christine Walling; and stepfather; Richard Furrh.

Mary Sina McCarty Higginbotham
Proctor (1928-2021) OK
Mary Sina Proctor was born on June 27, 1928 in Chouteau,
Oklahoma to Dan and Tina (McCleary) McCarty; she passed away on March 5, 2021 in
Pryor at the age of 92.
Mary was married to George Higginbotham on June 10, 1945; he preceded her in
death in 1975 after having cancer. Mary later married Shannon Proctor, June 3,
1977 and he also preceded her in death.
She lived in the Oklahoma City metro area until 1969.Mary worked at the Taco Boy
Restaurant in Norman where she met the owners of Sirloin Stockade and they
recruited her to work. Mary and her first husband, George, owned a Sirloin
Stockade in El Reno for several years; after George’s death she moved to Pryor
in 1975. She worked at Lincoln Elementary School in Pryor as the cafeteria
manager and was known for making the best cinnamon rolls.
Mary had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to go fishing and loved flower
gardening in her flower beds, especially her roses. She was a longtime member of
the First United Methodist Church in Pryor where she was very active with the
United Methodist Women and was always available to help with funeral dinners and
Rotary Club lunches.
She is survived by her son, Brad Higginbotham of Pryor; brother, Dan McCarty and
wife Vida of Tahlequah; sister Dora Harris of Tulsa; three granddaughters, Aimee
Bean and husband Richie of Mustang, Amanda McLemore and husband Don of Hobbs,
New Mexico, Shannon Stancer and husband Joe of Kansas City, Kansas and one
grandson, John Crowe and wife Sarah of Lenexa, Kansas; four great
granddaughters, four great grandsons, five great-great granddaughters, two
great-great grandsons; ten nephews, 8 nieces, fifteen great nieces, twelve great
nephews and many other great great grandchildren and two dear friends, Mozelle
Thomas and Joan Brown, both of Pryor.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, George B. Higginbotham and Shannon D.
Proctor; son, Danny Joe Higginbotham; daughter, Billie Sandra Payton; four
brothers, Ansel Harris, C.C. McCarty, Ray Mossier and James Higginbotham; three
sisters, Joy McCarty, Cora McCarty and Dean Mossier and parents, Dan and Tina
McCarty.

Teri Lynn (Mead) Higginbotham was born on October 8, 1950 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to Robert T. and Kathleen (Fazzino) Mead. Teri passed away on August 16, 2021 in Durant at the age of 70. Teri attended school at Cobb and worked as a Healthcare Provider. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, family gatherings, attending church with her friends and traveling. Teri was preceded in death by her parents. Teri is survived by her brother Robert Mead; son Tony Schuh and wife Carrie; daughter Krystal Taylor; grandchildren Jordan Schuh-Todd; Logan Amos, Travis Tanner Schuh and Noah Amos; great grandchildren Jaxon Todd and Greyson Travis Schuh and numerous extended family and friends. Teri was cremated according to her wishes and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Brown’s Durant Funeral and Cremation Service.

Viewing will be from 10:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Monday, with the
family present from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Dowdy-Marker Funeral Home, 201 West
Commercial Street, Haskell, Oklahoma. A Funeral Service has been scheduled for
10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ.
Directions to the church are: 1 mile south on N. 224 Road W. off of Skelly Road.
At 40th St. N. turn West (right) and go approximately 1/2 mile. The church is on
the right side of the road.
Leroy Eules Higginbotham was born on February 3, 1935 in a small house near
Cameron, Oklahoma to J. H. Higginbotham and Gussie Matilda (Sharp) Higginbotham.
He passed from this life on Friday morning, August 26, 2022 at his home and
ranch in Haskell, Oklahoma at the age of 87 years.
Leroy lived with his parents and sister, Lenora, in Beaumont, Texas until 1942
when they moved to Talihina, Oklahoma. In the winter of 1950, they moved to
Alamogordo, New Mexico and then on to Ontario, California in 1951, where he
completed High School and attended Chaffey Junior College. He worked in the
citrus packing plants in Claremont and Upland, and the Hancock Service Station
across the street from the Drive-In Theater. While in California, he enlisted in
the California Army National Guard. When his family returned to Poteau, Oklahoma
in 1953, he transferred to the Oklahoma Army National Guard. After returning to
Oklahoma, he worked odd jobs until he obtained employment with the Oklahoma
Highway Department in October 1953. In 1958 he was drafted into the U.S. Army.
He spent time in Fort Carson, Colorado, Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Ord, Camp
Roberts and Hunter Liggett Military Reservation in California and Tan Son Nhat
Airport, Saigon, South Viet Nam before being discharged in 1961. He returned to
the Oklahoma Highway Department in 1961 and was promoted to Location Engineer,
supervising three full-time survey crews and two part-time crews.
Leroy married the love of his life, Karen Rae (Benson) Higginbotham of Henryetta,
Oklahoma on April 7, 1962. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary
earlier this year. After their wedding, they moved to Sallisaw, Oklahoma where
he supervised a survey crew locating a new Interstate Highway from eastern
Oklahoma to Shawnee.
Both of Leroy’s children, son Warren and daughter Barrie, were born in Sallisaw
before moving to Hugo and Sapulpa, Oklahoma. On December 30, 1968, Leroy and
Karen spent the first night in their new home and 80-acre ranch in Haskell,
Oklahoma and started raising Beefmaster cattle.
In 1968, Leroy became a registered Oklahoma Professional Land Surveyor,
Certificate No. 84. He retired from the Department of Transportation in 1993,
with 46 years of service with the State of Oklahoma. He continued working as a
private surveyor until reaching the age of 75.
He was preceded in passing by his parents, his sister Lenora Morsund and her
husband John, sister-in-law Barbara, and his brother-in-law Tommy Clinton.
Leroy is survived by his wife Karen, son Warren and wife Kristina, daughter
Barrie and husband Vincent, sisters-in-law; Roberta and Carmel, his
grandchildren: Ryan and wife Lauren Higginbotham, Dylan Higginbotham, and Cody
Byrum, two great-grandchildren: Stella and Caspian, as well as numerous other
family members and friends.
When asked what he was most proud of in his life, he stated, “Karen, Warren,
Barrie, Pleasant Valley Church, and my Ranch”.
Honorary Pall Bearers will be: Jeff Roth, Gary Wheat, Mark Wheat, and Kelly
Parker.

Otis Kile Higginbotham was born January 11, 1927, to Mr. And Mrs. Otis Kile Higginbotham, Sr. in Wichita Falls, TX and passed away Monday, October 31, 2022, in the Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Weatherford, OK. Otis was raised in Wichita Falls, TX, and McCurtain, OK where he graduated from High School. He continued his education at Oklahoma A & M and was a member of the ROTC program and received a degree in Engineering. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army and retired as Colonel. He soon began a second career with the Civil Service and served on several projects including being Resident Engineer for the Denison Dam. He married the love of his life Claudia Francille Mosteller on June 6, 1947, in McCurtain, OK and they just celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary. They have been residents of the Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Weatherford, OK. He was a member of the Faith Fellowship Church in Denison, TX, past member of the Lions Club and Kiwanis Club in Denison, TX. He enjoyed playing golf, wood working, Church choir, traveling, and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim Higginbotham, and two sisters, Elsie Baker, and Lola Mae Higginbotham. He is survived by his wife, of the home, two sons, Clint Higginbotham and his wife, Wanda of Clinton Oklahoma and James Higginbotham, and wife, Mary of Cordell, OK He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Hazel Earnestine Higginbotham Chambers (1919-2022) TX/OK
Hazel Earnestine (Higginbotham) Chambers passed away Thursday,
November 3rd, at The Gardens in Sapulpa, Oklahoma at the age of 102.
She was born December 30, 1919, in Redwater, Texas to Euless and Pearl
Higginbotham, one of 12 children.
During early WWII, while working at Lone Star Ammunition Depot in Redwater, she
met Leroy (Pete) Chambers, her future husband. After Pete was discharged from
the Air Force, they were married June 26, 1944, in Little River, Arkansas.
After the marriage they lived in Texas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. Hazel was a
homemaker and had a small tax business in Sapulpa for many years. She enjoyed
growing many kinds of flowers. Her favorites were Chrysanthemums. She grew them
for local and state shows while living in Mississippi.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 47 years Pete Chambers,
eleven brothers and sisters, infant daughter Deborah, and daughter Karen Sue
Chambers Eager of Sapulpa.
Hazel is survived by her son Bob Chambers and wife Beverly of Sapulpa; grandsons
Bryan Chambers and wife Jill of Roanoke, TX., Blake Chambers and wife April of
Edmond, OK and granddaughter Racheal Eager of Sapulpa. Hazel was blessed with
six great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Boston, Kinley, Griffin and Silas Chambers,
and Lillyana Stevens.
Visitation is Thursday, November 10 from 5-7pm at Smith Funeral Home in Sapulpa,
OK.
Funeral services will be Friday, November 11 at 1:00 pm at First United
Methodist Church of Sapulpa.

Rowland Higginbotham, 77 of Grove, went to his heavenly home on May 17, 2023.
Rowland was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas on December 21, 1945. On April 22,
1983, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Diane Haibon. Rowland
was happiest when he had a project going; he loved keeping busy. He worked
various careers including a ASCP certified medical technologist, a farmer and
dairy farmer, and as a team trucker with his wife for 15 years. He enjoyed
woodworking and doing remodels. He was an active member of Cayuga Mission
Church. Survivors include his loving wife Diane, children: Kimberly Laughlin and
husband Kendall, Jim Wallis and wife Christy, Crystal Lewis and husband Jerry,
Kelly Conant and husband Tom, 5 granddaughters, 6 grandsons, 17 great
grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in
death by his parents: Kenneth Phillips and Robert and Phyllis Higginbotham,
sons: Darin and Craig Higginbotham, grandson Dustin Harp, and siblings Larry
Higginbotham, Bob Higginbotham, and Sharon Largent. A memorial service will be

STILLWATER, Okla. - Kent Hickenbottom, 64, passed away on July 8, 2023, at home
in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Prayer service will be 7 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2023, at the St. Joseph's
Catholic Church in Broken Bow, Nebraska. A Mass of Christian burial will follow
at 10 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2023, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Services
will be lived streamed at www.govierbrothers.com. Burial will be in the Broken
Bow Cemetery. A register book can be signed at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Kent Hickenbottom was born on March 16, 1959, in Broken Bow, Nebraska to Larry
Allen and Vanetta Joice (Porter) Hickenbottom. Kent was raised and graduated
from Broken Bow, Nebraska High School. He went on to college and received his
Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering.
Kent loved to hang out with his family. He enjoyed anything that was related to
his family from vacation to being a jokester, to being in his favorite spot,
"The Shed" collecting tools. When going out with family/friends, he enjoyed his
margaritas.
Kent married the love of his life, Lanette Vetter, on June 11, 2005, in North
Dakota. After they married, they made their home in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Shortly after that, Kent was transferred for his job to Sugar Land, Texas. He
retired from Phillips 66 and moved to Dickinson, North Dakota, and worked for
Marathon for five years. In 2021, Kent moved his family to Stillwater, Oklahoma
where he went back to work for Phillips 66.
Kent was preceded in death by both grandparents; his father-in-law, Joseph T.
Vetter; and brother-in-law, John Vetter.
Kent leaves behind, his wife, Lanette of 18 years of marriage, his pride and
joy; his daughters, Abbie Jo Hickenbottom and Anna Rae Hickenbottom, Stillwater;
stepchildren, Brandi Weaver, Lake Charles, Louisiana and Zachary Weaver,
Bismarck, North Dakota; his parents, Larry Allen and Vanetta Joice (Porter)
Hickenbottom, Broken Bow, Nebraska; mother-in-law, Geneva Vetter, Bismarck,
North Dakota; in laws, Joanne and Kendal Busch, Kathleen Vetter, Bernie and

Higginbotham. He passed from this life on Monday, August 21, 2023, in Sulphur,
at the age of 85. At the age of five years old, Billy Joe and his family moved
from New Mexico to Ardmore. After attending school in Dickson, he joined the
United States Navy and devoted eight years of service to our country. Upon being
honorably discharged from the Navy, Billy Joe returned home to Ardmore where he
spent many years working as machine tool inspector for the Stromberg Carlson
Corporation in Gene Autry. After Stromberg Carlson closed, he then went to work
as a night support manager at the Ardmore Wal-Mart, until his retirement in
2007. Billy Joe was a very active man. Even in failing health, he continued to
be on the go at all times. He enjoyed going on daily walks and tending to his
flower and vegetable gardens. He was an avid fan of classic cars and in younger
years enjoyed playing and coaching coed softball. Being the artistic individual
he was, he spent countless hours doing intricate drawings, as well as doing
floral designs. One of his most favorite pass times was reading and studying his
Bible. Those left to cherish his memory include his three daughters, Jimi Jo
Rude of Wylie, TX, Kelly Wages of Mill Creek, OK, and Caitlin Valet & husband
Jay of Mansville, OK; one son, Michael Anthony Higginbotham of Ardmore; seven
grandchildren, Heather Goodin and Tyler Rude, both of Wylie, TX, Ian England and
Rennie England, both of Davis, Zachary Higginbotham of Ardmore, Sara Lena Warner
of Springer, and MacKenzie Sloan of Oklahoma City; eight great-grandchildren; as
well as one brother, Tony Higginbotham of Ardmore. In addition to his parents,
Billy Jo was preceded in death by his wife Beverly Higginbotham in Dec 2020;
wife Lena Higginbotham in Mar of 1990; one daughter Billie Eugina McLaughlin in
Feb 2010; as well as four siblings, Ruby Lancaster, Milton Higginbotham, Shirley
Keeton, and Edna Day. Cremation services were entrusted to Hale's Funeral Home
of Davis.

Norma Rae Palmer Higginbotham (1955-2023) OK
Norma Rae (Palmer) Higginbotham, age 67, passed away on
Friday, October 13, 2023, at her home in Lebanon, Oklahoma. Funeral services
will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, October 20, 2023, in The Chapel at Griffin ~
Hillcrest, of Ardmore, Okla., with The Reverend Steve Wall officiating.
Interment will follow services in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Ardmore.
Norma was born in Ardmore, Okla., on October 26, 1955, to Raymond Palmer and
Millie (Phillips) Palmer. She attended and graduated from Ardmore High School in
the Class of 1974. She married Tony Dean Higginbotham on April 2, 1974 in
Ardmore. Norma worked in the service and food service industries. The couple
moved to Richardson, Texas, in 1983 and she worked in the school cafeteria.
Norma returned to the Ardmore area in 2016, and moved to her son's home in
Lebanon, Okla., in 2021. She loved to go fishing, play bingo, and take walks.
Anytime she could, Norma would spend time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Toni Rae-Ann Higginbotham,
grandson, Prince Ray Higginbotham, granddaughter-in-law, Savannah Higginbotham,
sister, Glenda "JoAnn" Linderman, brothers: Raymond Palmer, Jr., Jimmy "Buffalo"
Palmer, John Adam Palmer, and David Glenn Palmer, and an infant sister.
Norma is survived by sons: Jonathan "Binky" Higginbotham and wife, Lea, of
Lebanon, Okla., and Cecil Browning Higginbotham II and wife, Jill, of
Richardson, Texas. Eleven grandchildren: Cecil III, Courtney, Candice, Amber,
Bethany, Jonathan Jr., Faith, Joe, Victor, Lacey, and Eric. Twelve
great-grandchildren: Jaslynn, Victor, Nevaeh, Brandon Jr., Izayha, Hunter, Tony
Dean II, Ricklynn, Raylynn, Levi Jr, Sarenity, and Ezekel. Sisters: Rebecca
Collins and Lahoma Jean Palmer-Lowe. Brothers: Winston Isaac Palmer and James
Lynn Palmer. Numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Victor Cazares, Dakota Palmer, Chris Palmer
Harmon, Billy Palmer, Jason Kent, Brandon Kent, Jamielynn Palmer, and Winston
Isaac Palmer, Jr.
Honorary bearers are Victor Ricano, Joe Joslin, Triton Collins, Bruce Palmer,

Lou Ann Clinkenbeard Higginbottom Calahan (1938-2024) OK
Our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Lou Ann Callahan, age 85, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2024 at her home. Lou Ann was born November 20,1938 in Prague, OK to Homer Eugene and Josephine Elizabeth Lacquement Clinkenbeard. Lou Ann graduated from Northeast High School in 1956. She married Lonnie Higginbottom in 1963 and they were together until his death in 1980. In 1987, she was set up on a blind date with Zane Callahan, and it was love at first sight. They were married a few months later on January 15,1988 and enjoyed 33 loving years together. They enjoyed travelling and were members of the Oklahoma Hitchhikers Club for 25 years. She also enjoyed going to the casino, cooking, and spending time with her family. Lou Ann was an inventory manager at Tinker, AFB for 30 years. Lou Ann was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Lonnie Higginbottom and Zane Callahan and her son, Lonnie Higginbottom. She is survived by her children, Sheila Renee Pierce and husband, Joel and Stacy Standifer, step-children Shelia Callahan and husband, Robi Owen and Larry Callahan and wife, and Sally; 8 grandchildren, Remy Pierce, Aaron Owen, Meagan Spaulding, Cheyenne Cummings, Camryn Cummings, Jeremy Callahan, Allison Callahan and Jason Callahan, 7 great grandchildren, Preslee, Avery, Levi, Alexia, Levi, and Everly and her brother, Leo Clinkenbeard; as well as other family members and friends.

Mary Ann Higginbotham Davis (1950-2024) TX/OK
Mary Ann Higginbotham Davis, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister passed away on February 17, 2024, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, at the age of 73. Born July 18, 1950, in Texarkana, Texas, Mary Ann leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories. Mary Ann will be remembered for her amazing laugh, feisty spirit and her unwavering love for her family. She touched the lives of many, and her memory will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who knew her best. A self described chocoholic, Mary Ann loved fast cars, the beach, flower arranging, laughing, shopping for treasures and doting on her little dogs. Mary Ann was always willing to lend a helping hand and volunteer wherever she could. She was an active member of Hardy United Memorial Methodist Church. She loved helping with the turkey dinners and decorating the church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Texarkana Car Club. Mary Ann worked for the Social Security Administration until retirement. Although never shy about proclaiming she hated her job, she loved being able to help people and she loved the people that she worked with; many of whom became chosen family and lifelong friends to her and her children. Mary Ann is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Toni Ann and Dustin Ivey of Stillwater, OK; and Cory Davis and Zachary Lewis of Athens, GA. She was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Vivien Ann, William Michael, and Henry Desmond Ivey; Davis Austin, Jackson William, and Parker Mae Lewis. Mary Ann loved her grandchildren and her presence in their lives will be deeply missed. She is also survived by the father of her children, Jimmy Davis; their grandmother, Wanda Alexander; her sister, Rebecca Jo Higginbotham Clem; and three nieces. Additionally, she is survived by her Aunt Margie Higginbotham and several cousins. Along with raising her own children, Mary Ann formed a special bond with their friends, many of which she loved like her own. Even Alzheimer’s couldn’t take away her love for them and she asked about them to the very end. You know who you are. Mary Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Alma Jewel (Cromer) and Desmond William Higginbotham; and many aunts and uncles. We ask that you keep Mary Ann in your memories and share funny stories of and about her. Every once in a while, have a Mr. Goodbar, eat some Mexican food, and wash it down with a Diet Coke in her memory. A celebration of Mary Ann's life will be held to honor her memory and the profound impact she had on all who knew her. Church of Christ, with Steve Harbison officiating. A burial will follow at Mt.
Olivet Cemetery. Friends and family may gather to remember Lewis during
visitation on Thursday, April 18th, from 6-7 p.m. at Prater-Lampton-Mills &
Coffey Chapel. The final arrangements have been entrusted to Prater-Lampton-Mills
& Coffey. Lewis’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, respect,
and unwavering commitment to one's community. His legacy will be cherished and
preserved in the memories of all who were blessed to know him.
