Lydia Conway Higginbotham (1875-1920) WV

Mrs. Lydia Higginbottom, aged 44 years, died Sunday morning at her home on Chandler’s Branch. The remains were brought to the home of relatives at 1647 Sixth Avenue later in the day and funeral services will take place there at four o’clock. Interment will follow in Sattes graveyard.

Margaret Ella Barr Higginbotham (ca1891-1920) WV

Mrs. Margaret Ella Higginbotham, wife of Thomas J. Higginbotham, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barr, died of pneumonia at her home in Grant District Friday, February 27, age 29 years.

Rev. W. J. Postlethwait conducted funeral services from the family home Sunday, February 29, and interment was at the Lowman cemetery in charge of Director Harry Palmer of Pine Grove.

The deceased was a member of the Baptist church and was highly respected by a wide circle of friends and neighbors.

Surviving besides her husband are four daughters, mother, three brothers and two sisters.

Marshall N. Higginbotham (1877-1920) WV

Mr. Marshall Higginbotham, aged about 45, former well known attorney of Charleston and until about a year assistant printing clerk attached to the office of Attorney General E. T. England, died last Friday morning, Dec. 10, at the home of his sister, Mrs. John Ellinghouse, in Sapulpa, Okla. He was formerly a resident of Hinton and leaves many friends in Summers county. Mr. Higginbotham is survived by one daughter, Miss Virginia. His remains were brought to Charleston and interred there in Spring Hill cemetery last Monday.

Funeral services for Marshall Higginbotham who died in Oklahoma, were held at the Simpson chapel this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The body was convened to Spring Hill cemetery where it was placed in the mausoleum.

Mr. Higginbotham (was) formerly with the attorney general's office in the state house and out of respect for him, the attorney general's office was closed during the hours of the funeral this afternoon.

Ida Jane Selbe Higginbotham (1868-1921) WV

Mrs. Ida Higginbotham, wife of E. C. Higginbotham, 217 Goshorn Street, died suddenly at 12 o’clock Sunday. She is survived by her husband, two children, a son, Randolph Higginbotham, of the United States Navy; a daughter, Miss Thyre Higginbotham; her father, Samuel Selbe, of Stop No. 8; four sisters and three brothers.

Yesterday her son had not yet learned of his mother’s death. He is known to be stationed somewhere Annapolis, but had not been located.

Funeral services are to be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the First M. E. Church, of which Mrs. Higginbotham had been a member for twenty-four years.

Samuel H. Higinbotham (1843-1921) PA/WV

Charleston, W. Va. Jn. 29th - Samuel Higinbotham, a retired farmer, died yesterday at his home near Rippon, aged 77 years. He was prominent as a Republican of the eastern panhandle in former years and was postmaster here under President Harrison's administration. He served in the Union Army from his native state of Pennsylvania. A daughter, Mrs. Henry S. Baker, of Washington, D.C., and two sons survive.

Frances A. Smith Strickland Higginbotham (1853-1922) WV

Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Strickland, 69 years old, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nora Edens, 711 Bigley Avenue, Sunday night, were held this afternoon at 2 0’clock at the Edens residence. Rev. F. C. Brown, pastor of the Bream Memorial Church, conducted the services. Interment was made in the Higginbotham Cemetery.

Mrs. Strickland had been a resident of the West Side for a number of years, and at one time was prominent in club work. She had been ill for about four weeks.

She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Gertrude Ellis, Mrs. Bertha Keyser, Mrs. Nora Edens and William Strickland, all residents of this city. She is also survived by one sister and three brothers.

Headline: An Aged Farmer Dies Yesterday. Matthew Hickenbottom Passes Away At His New England Residence

Matthew Hickenbottom, aged 75, well known farmer, died yesterday morning at his home near New England following an illness of about two months from the infirmities of his advanced years. He was born in Monroe County, Ohio, but had been a resident of West Virginia 44 years. Funeral arrangements will not be made until absent children arrive.

The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie Hickenbottom, and the following children: Joe, at home; Matthew Jr., whose present residence is unknown; Mrs. Fannie McPherson, of Little Rock, Ark. Who wired last night that she would be here for the funeral; Mrs. Mollie Evans and Mrs. Carrie Gault, both of Parkersburg; Mrs. Laura Dent, of Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Emma Daughtery, of Buchtel, Ohio.

William E. Higginbotham (1860-1924) WV

On April 5^th the death angel entered the home of W. E. Higginbotham at Earnshaw and claimed for its victim a dear husband and father. W. E. Higginbotham was born August 9^th, 1861, and departed this life April 5^th, 1924, aged 62 years, seven months and twenty-eight days. He was a son of Enoch Higginbotham, one of the old settlers of the vicinity of Earnshaw, and the deceased had spent his entire life in that vicinity and will be greatly missed by his many friends. Funeral services were conducted from his home, with interment in the Higginbotham Cemetery in charge of Undertaker Hunt.

Claude Edward Higginbotham (1925-1926) WV

Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock yesterday morning at the home for Claude E. Higginbotham, four months old son of Albert Higginbotham, of Kilarm. The Rev. C. C. Lanham, pastor of the Shinnston M. E. Church, had charge, with interment in the Swiger cemetery on Coon’s Run. The child died of pneumonia Sunday.

John Henry Higginbotham (1856-1929) WV

John H. Higginbotham died at his home at Winona Monday, January 7. He had been in failing health for some time, having leakage of the heart and cancer of the stomach. His death was not unexpected.

Decedent was a devoted Christian, being a member of the Baptist church and was a great Bible reader and had many chapters committed to memory.

He was 72 years, 5 months and 13 days old. He was married to Mary E. Bennett, April 10, 1874. There were 11 children born to this union, two dying in infancy. His wife and 9 children survive, to-wit: Mrs. Martha Sears, of Stone Cliff; Mrs. John Harris, and C. W. Higginbotham, of Claremont; Mrs. Lewis Bales, of South Charleston; Mrs. Wm. Bowling, of Gap Mills, Monroe County; J. H. Higginbotham, of Fire Creek; Henry, of Beury; Newton, of Nuttallburg, and Mrs. B. W. Blofield, of Winona.

Services were held at the home and remains laid to rest at the Pool cemetery, in Nicholas county.

Leora Higginbotham (1909-1929) WV

Miss Leora Higginbotham, 18, daughter of Andy Higginbotham of Speedway, died at the home of her brother, D. A. Higginbotham in East Princeton, Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock after a lingering illness. Death was due to mastoiditis. She spent a week in a local hospital, but surgeons termed her case as hopeless and she was taken to the home of her brother. Funeral arrangements had not been completed late in the afternoon. Miss Higginbotham’s father formerly lived in Princeton.

Funeral services for Miss Leora Higginbotham, 19, daughter of Andy Higginbotham of Speedway who died at the home of her brother, D. A. Higginbotham in East Princeton, Thursday afternoon will be conducted at Graham’s Chapel Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. Burial will take place in the family cemetery near the chapel.

Mary Francis Medley Higginbotham (1874-1929) WV

Headline: Mrs. Higginbotham Victim of Illness. Heart Disease Fatal to Wife of Local Contractor

Mrs. A. G. Higginbotham, aged 53 years, wife of a prominent local contractor, died about midnight Sunday at her home on Virginia Street following a sudden attack of heart disease. Mrs. Higginbotham, who was apparently in good health had retired when she suddenly became ill.

Before marriage she was Miss Fannie Medley and her entire life had been spent in Charleston. She was a member of the Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church and was active in church work. Also, she was a member of the Woman’s Club of Charleston.

Mrs. Higginbotham is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tom Riggs of Huntington and Mrs. Estelle Alexander of Charleston, and two sons, Weir and John Higginbotham of Charleston.

Funeral services will be held at the residence, 1716 Virginia Street, Wednesday afternoon at four o’clock, in charge of Rev. F. J. Brook. Interment will be in Spring Hill cemetery.

Frank Jackson Higginbotham (1898-1929) WV

Front page headline: Two Miners Died Instantly When Caught In Slate Fall

Two employees of the Peerless Coal and Coke Company at Vivian were instantly this morning about 11 o’clock in a slate fall in the mines.

The men were: Frank Higginbotham, 31, track helper; and John Turner, 46, miner. Higginbotham was single. Turner was married and leaves a widow and nine children.

The two men were working together and were separated from other men in the mine. No one else was injured in the accident. Higginbotham sustained crushing injuries to the head and chest and Turner received crushing injuries to the head. They were both dead when other miners reached them.

Higginbotham is survived by his mother, Mrs. T. R. Barratt, who is manager of the club house at Vivian. He had lived at Vivian for the past 15 years.

Turner had been with the coal company only two months. He was originally from Virginia and relatives at Ferrun, Va., were notified this morning of his death.

The bodies are to be at the Douglas Undertaking Establishment awaiting funeral arrangements which had not been made early this afternoon.
