William Ralph Higginbotham (1913-1970) WV

William Ralph Higginbotham, 56, a resident of 504 Highland Ave., Follansbee, W.Va., died at his home, Jan. 8, 1970. He was born Nov. 11, 1913, the son of Clark and Clarinda Showalter Higginbotham, in Jacksonburg. He was a Protestant, served with the Army in World War II and was a coal miner by trade.

William Edgar Higginbotham (1888-1970) WV

William E. Higginbotham, 81, of Hastings, W.Va., died Sun. Jan. 25, at Wetzel Co. Hospital, New Martinsville. He was born in Wetzel Co., Aug. 24, 1888, son of Washington and Hallie Ann White Higginbotham. He was a member of Long Valley Baptist Church. Surviving are his widow, Blanche Lemasters Higginbotham; 2 daughters, Mrs. Edna Williams of Weirton, and Mrs. Erma Rose Leek of Hastings; 2 sons, Melvin of Weirton, and Glen of Alvy, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. 1 son and 3 daughters preceded him in death. Friends were received at the Palmer Funeral Home where services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. M. L. Amundson officiating. Interment in K. of P. Cemetery, Hastings.

Rev. James Archie Higginbotham (1891-1970) VA/WV African-American

Rites Incomplete For Minister, 79

The Rev. James A. Higginbotham, 79, of 122 Sour St., East Park, died in a local nursing home at 5 p.m. Sunday after a long illness.

He was born in Amherst County, Va., a son of the late Thomas and Viney Lee Higginbotham.

He served as pastor of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church at Carlisle at the time of his death and has pastored various other churches in the New River District over the past 50 years. He was vice president of the New River Ministers and Deacons Union, was a trustee of the West Virginia State Baptist Convention, a member of the Just Right Masonic Lodge No. 27 of Harlem Heights, a veteran of World War I, and a retired coal miner.

Survivors include his widow, Vernie Luck Higginbotham; three granddaughters; one stepdaughter, Mrs. J. Douglas Anderson of Dunbar.

The body is at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor pending completion of arrangements.

Funeral services for the Rev. James A. Higginbotham, 79, of 122 Sour St., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. W. A. Jones, Warren Lewis and Ray Washington officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.

He died Sunday at 5 p.m. in a local nursing home following a long illness.

Mrs. Susan Higginbotham, 72, of 423 14th St., died Friday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Emma B. Hill, 567 W. 9th Ave. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at the Grace Gospel Church by the Rev. Charles Sheers and the Rev. Melvin Efaw. Burial will be in Woodmere Memorial Park. Pallbearers will include Bob Buskirk, Bill Morrison, Ernie Plybon, Carrol White, Gaylord Sheers and Gene Swann. Born Feb. 17, 1898, at Lookout, W. Va., she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Zelda Gilbert. Additional survivors include two sons, Emery Higginbotham of St. Albans and Troy Higginbotham of Altoona, Pa.; two brothers, Frank Gilbert of Seth and Walter Gilbert of Huntington; a sister, Mrs. Mary Jackson of Marion, Ohio; and five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Donald Lee Higginbotham, 42, of 115 Fairview St., died suddenly Saturday morning in a doctor’s office in Mannington. He was born Sept. 15, 1928, son of James and Minnie Straight Higginbotham.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Moore Higginbotham and two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Donna) Efaw of Mannington and Virginia Lee, at home; one grandson, Donald Alan Efaw; one brother, Clem of New Cumberland; four sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Lelia) Syphers, Mrs. William (Helen) Hendershot and Mrs. Delbert (Marie) Moran, all of Mannington; Mrs. Edward (Opal) Pope of Newell, Ohio.

He was a member of the Dent’s Run Baptist Church, A. F. and A. Masons Lodge 31, the Eastern Star and was an employee of Morgan Auto Parts.

Higginbotham Funeral Today

Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors for Robert E. Higginbotham, 79, of James Street who died Saturday at 7:20 a.m. in the Hinton Hospital following a long illness.

Rev. W. R. McCoy officiated at the service and burial followed in Restwood Memorial Estates.

Born at Elgood, Mercer County, June 8, 1892, he was a son of the late Robert H. and Nannie Skeens Higginbotham and had been a resident of Hinton for the past 45 years.

He was a retired employee of Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America, a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion and a member of the Central Baptist Church, Hinton.

Surviving are his wife, Willie Huff Higginbotham; a son, Eugene of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Maude Morehead, Princeton.

Members of the Men’s Bible Class of the Central Baptist Church served as pallbearers.

Mr. Higginbotham was a retired coal miner.

She was a member of Levi First Baptist Church in Rand.

Logan—Mrs. Tytyne Higginbotham, a teacher in Logan County for 42 years, died Saturday in a Beckley Hospital.

Mrs. Higginbotham, of Shamrock in Logan County, last taught at Earling Grade School.

A graduate of Bluefield State College, she was a member of St. Phillips Baptist Church of Cora, a past bacillus of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, a past president of the county and state Federated Women’s Club and an officer of the Crippled Children’s Society.

Surviving: husband, Tetris (Petris); son, Henry Tetris of Seattle, Wash.; sister, Mrs. Nina Smith of Beckley.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in St. Phillips Baptist Church in Cora with the Rev. J. T. Mann officiating. Burial will be in Guyan Memorial Gardens at Godby.

Mrs. Nina Eugenia Perdue of Shady Spring died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in a local hospital following a long illness.

Born at Buffalo, she was a daughter of the late Charles O. Higginbotham and Sarah Elizabeth Cornell.

She belonged to the Coal River Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Charles A. Perdue; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Boland of Hinton, Mrs. Laura Thompson of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Lila Blackburn, Baltimore, Md.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Peace Chapel with Dr. Kenneth L. Swank officiating. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Park.

Funeral services for Raymond Hickenbottom, 61, of 2611 New York Ave., who died Saturday morning at the St. Joseph’s Hospital after a long illness, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kimes Funeral Home, with the Rev. C. William Bollinger officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

He was born September 10, 1910, in Wood County. He was a member of the Stephenson Memorial United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War II, and was employed at the Reps Furniture Co. for over 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Hickenbottom; two sons, Franklin Leep and John Leep, of Vienna; one daughter, Mrs. Louverna Powell of Torch, O.; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Hurst and Mrs. Blanche Freed, of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Audra Adams of New England; and one aunt, Mrs. S. L. McPherson of Port Orange, Fla.

Ex-Pastor’s Rite Slated For Tuesday

Service is being held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Cook Funeral Home for the Rev. Robert Franklin Higginbotham, founder and retired pastor of the Cedar Grove Baptist Temple, who died Saturday in Charleston Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Higginbotham, 86, of Cedar Grove was a native of Paradise, Putnam County and operated the R. F. Higginbotham and Co. in Cedar Grove.

He was also a former barber and postal mail route driver.

Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Garnett Hudnall and Mrs. Pearl Phalen, both of Cedar Grove; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jim Franklin will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery at Cedar Grove.

H. C. (Pete) Higginbotham, 78, of Franklin Street, Mannington, died Sunday afternoon in Fairmont General Hospital. He was born May 25, 1893, near Mannington, a son of the late Lewis W. and Sarah Virginia Baker Higginbotham.

Survivors include his widow, Lulu D. Hildreth Higginbotham; a half sister, Opal Straight, Dent’s Run; three brothers, Lee, Ralph, and James, and four sisters, Bertha Floyd, Clara Christy, and Vinnie Hayes and Tillie Higginbotham, are deceased.

He was a retired farmer, a veteran of World War I, a member of VFW, the Modern Woodmen of World, and the Dent’s Run Baptist Church.

Mrs. Sarah Catherine Higginbotham, 87, of 2337 3rd Ave., Nitro, died Tuesday in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was a native of Putnam County and a member of the Church of God at Nitro.

Surviving: sons, Willard F., Hansford N., Virgil D., and James W. of Miami, Fla.; daughters, Mrs. Della Ogburn and Mrs. Virginia Sandy of Nitro; brother, Will Watkins of Nitro.

Cooke and Pauley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lacy A. Higginbotham, 50, of 1318 13th St., Nitro, died Thursday night in Charleston General Hospital after a long illness.

He was a production leader of the staple department of the FMC American Viscose Division at Nitro, having 30 years service. Mr. Higginbotham was a World War II veteran and a member of the Church of God at Nitro.

David Higgenbotham, 49, of Huntersville, died Friday, May 19, 1972, at his home of an apparent heart attack.

Born at Harts Run, June 1, 1922, he was a son of the late Wash and Belle Higgenbotham.

He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Virginia Potter Higgenbotham, and one niece, Mrs. Martha Plumley, of Abraham.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Cummings Creek United Methodist Church by the Rev. Samuel Schoolcraft, with burial in the Beaver Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Virginia May Higginbotham, 41, of Goshen, Ind., formerly of Decota on Cabin Creek , died Monday in a Goshen hospital shortly after arrival. The cause of death is undetermined.

She was a member of Wevaco Baptist Church.

Born in Princeton, he was a son of the late Thomas J. and Macie Thorn Higginbotham.

Survivors include two sisters, Melrose and Ruby Higginbotham of Princeton; and one brother, T. J. Higginbotham of Princeton.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Kee Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig on Bluefield-Princeton Road.

The body will be taken from Memorial Funeral Directory to the residence today at 4 p.m. where friends may call, and will be taken to the church one hour prior to services.

He was an employee of Columbus Housing Authority and was a Korean War veteran.

Earl Higginbotham, 59, 103 Hinton Road, Princeton, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday in a Beckley Hospital after a long illness.

He was employed as a car man for the Norfolk and Western Railroad Co. A member of Car Man Local No. 139, American Legion Post 154 and the Athens United Methodist Church, he was a World War II veteran.

Born at Gardner, he was a son of the late Andy and Doshie Hazelwood Higginbotham.

Surviving are his wife, Leola Gertrude Higginbotham; a son, Earl J.; a foster son, James Rose, and two foster daughters, Mrs. Susie Anderson and Mrs. Sharon Rose, all of Athens; two sisters, Mrs. Media Duncan and Mrs. Murl Duncan and two brothers, Dewey and Grady, all of Princeton; and two grandchildren.

William Moore Higginbotham Sr., 94, of Frankford, died Friday, October 20, 1972 in Greenbrier Valley Hospital.

He was a former Member of the Greenbrier County Board of Education and a former member of Greenbrier Valley Soil Conservation Board and Shorthorn Breeders Association. He was a retired cattleman and farmer.

Mr. Higginbotham was a member and trustee of Frankford United Methodist Church and was a member of Greenbrier County Farm Bureau and Ruritan Club.

He is survived by a son, William Jr. of Frankford; sister, Mrs. Raymond Bright of Frankford; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday in Jack K. Wallace Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Rosewood Cemetery.

The Rev. Paul Higgins and the Rev. Walter Frost will officiate and interment will be in the Rock Hill Cemetery near Flushing, O.

He was born in Woodsfield, O., March 4, 1896, son of the late George and Harriet Burdette Hickenbottom. A resident of Belpre for the last 24 years, he was a member of the Lodell United Methodist Church at Rockport. A member of the CIO Local No. 35, he had been employed at the A. B. Chance Co. and the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are his widow, Luvada Smith Hickenbottom; two daughters, Mrs. Jean Snider of Belpre and Amelia Hickenbottom of Parkersburg; two sons, R.P Hickenbottom of Williamstown and F.D. Hickenbottom of Melbourne, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Preceding Mr. Hickenbottom in death were three brothers and threes sisters.

John Crockett Higginbotham II (1894-1973) WV/OH/FL

John Higginbotham, 78, of Sarasota, Fla., died in Sarasota Saturday following a short illness.

He had resided in Sarasota since retiring in 1960. He was a grandson of John and Elizabeth Allen Higginbotham, early settlers of Bluefield and was the last surviving member of the John C. and Daisy Johnston Higginbotham, residents of Bluefield in the early 1900’s.

He was born in Bluefield and later resided in Athens. A 1915 graduate of Concord College, he had lived for some years in Portsmouth, Ohio and later moved to McDowell County. He had been an elementary and secondary schoolteacher in Mercer and McDowell County schools but later was widely known in this area as a sales representative for mining supplies.

Surviving are his widow, Chloe Adair Higginbotham; one daughter, Mrs. George F. Bauer, Jr. of Middletown, Ohio; two sons, John Higginbotham IV of Greensboro, N.C., and Commander Allan Bane Higginbotham, stationed with the US Navy in Vienna, Va.; and nine grandchildren.

Graveside rites will be conducted Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bluefield with his brother-in-law, Rev. Merril M. Brammer of Muskegon, Mich., officiating. The family requests that contributions be made to the Athens Methodist Church of to a favorite charity. Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rose R. Higinbotham, 93, of 73 Rebecca St., Shinnston, died at 7:10 p.m. Friday in St. Barbara’s Nursing Home. She was born April 19, 1880 at Pine Bluff, near Shinnston, a daughter of the late George Franklin and Sarah Carolina Shinn Randall.

She was a widow of Charles Harry Higinbotham, who died in 1954. Higinbotham was superintendent of the Owings Mine No. 32 for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Reed of Shinnston; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A son, George Higinbotham, president of Consolidated Coal Co., died in 1967, and a daughter, Mrs. Ellen Thorne, also died in 1967.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shinnston, a member of the Eastern Star, a member of the DAR, and a member of the Colonial Dames. She was the first chairman of the American Red Cross in Shinnston and served in the post during both World War I and World War II.

Mrs. Higinbotham was a member of the Shinnston Woman’s Club and a former president of the club, and a member of the Shinnston Garden Club.

The body is in the Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston. Funeral plans are incomplete.

Fred Higginbotham, 85, of 41 Rebecca St., Shinnston, a retired foreman for the Consolidated Coal Co., died in a Clarksburg hospital at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.

He was born Dec. 17, 1888, in Fairmont, a son of the late James Lamb and Mary Work Higginbotham. His first wife, Margaret Shaffer Higginbotham, is deceased.

Survivors include his second wife, Margaret Robey Higginbotham; a son, Frederick S Higginbotham, Four States; three daughters, Mrs. George (Vera) Sikinow, Route 1, Farmington; Mrs. Chester (Geralding) Southern, Shinnston; Mrs. John (Margie) Alkire, Raleigh, N.C.; two step children, Mrs. John B. (Marjorie) Stout, Pittsburgh; and Edward Bowman, Kingwood; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was employed for 50 years at the Carolina Mine and the Owings Mine. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Historical Society and the Senior Citizens Club of Shinnston.

Mrs. Pearl Lee Higginbotham, 75, of Big Chimney, died Friday in the General Division of CAMC after a seven-week illness.

Surviving: husband, Charles; daughters, Mrs. Ruby Rock of Elkview, Mrs. Reba Barker of Stockbridge, Mich.; stepdaughters, Mrs. Macil Fields of Elkview, Mrs. Mabel Huffman of Big Chimney; sisters, Mrs. Hazel Lemmon and Mrs. Georgia Field of Charleston, Mrs. Dormia Haynes of Big Chimney.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday in Albert Myers and Son Funeral Home, Elkview, with the Rev. Billy Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Mrs. Bertha L. Higginbotham, 67, of 183 East Point Dr., died Wednesday in the General Division of CAMC after a long illness.

She was a retired employee of the State Department of Highways. She was a member of Salines Presbyterian Church at Malden.

Surviving: husband, Emanuel; sons, Emanuel Ray and John Albert of Charleston; daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Leach and Mrs. Helen Walz of Scott Depot, Mrs. Violet Goff of Cross Lanes, Mrs. Marjorie Litton of Hurricane; brothers, John Quinn of Charleston and Delbert Quinn of Richmond, Va.; sister, Mrs. Nellie Frazier of Charleston; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the United Christian Church, Simmons Creek, with the Rev. John R. Dodd and the Rev. Zack Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Simmons Creek Cemetery.

Frederick S. Higginbotham II, 50, of Enterprise, died unexpectedly at 5:45 p.m. Sunday at Four States. He was born June 7, 1915, at Carolina, a son of the late Frederick and Margaret Shaffer Higginbotham.

Survivors include his widow, Frances Bart Higginbotham; a son, Dr. Frederick S. Higginbotham III, Reston, Va.; his stepmother, Mrs. Margaret Higginbotham of Shinnston; three sisters, Mrs. George (Vera) Sikinow, Carolina, Mrs. Chester (Geraldine) Southern, Shinnston, and Mrs. John (Marjorie) Alkire, Virginia.

He was a veteran of World War II.

He was a retired farmer and a member of Trace Fork Baptist Church.

Walter Higginbotham, 64, of Rt. 1, Core, died Saturday morning at the University Hospital.

He was born Dec. 25, 1909, in Morgantown, the son of the late Albert and Sarah Ann Higginbotham.

He was a coal miner by profession.

He is survived by two brothers, Charles Higginbotham of Gary, Ind., Sherman Higginbotham of Core; two sisters, Mrs. Woneda Cutright and Mrs. Mary Devore, both of Morgantown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Mrs. Frances Jenkins Higgenbotham, 67, of Rt. 5, Charleston, died Wednesday in St. Francis Hospital. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter-Day Saints, Mormon, and was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County.

Surviving: husband, Clayton; daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Brown of Charleston; stepdaughter, Mrs. Teressa Moore of Proctor; stepson, Carl Higgenbotham of Sisters, Ore.; sister, Mrs. Margaret Craze of Charleston.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Bartlett-Burdette Funeral Home with Elder Steven Atkinsson officiating. Burial will be in the Jenkins Cemetery, Kanawha Two-Mile.

Wave For Help Fails to Save Ex-City Woman

Miami, Fla. - A former Charleston, W. Va. woman waved frantically at a policeman from the rear seat of a car driving down a street here Thursday, but was unable to save her own life because within seconds she was shot three times in the chest.

The policeman who saw Mrs. Cecelia Ann Higginbotham, 31, waving to him told a reporter for the Miami Herald that within seconds he heard five gunshots from the vehicle.

Investigating, the officer learned that Mrs. Higginbotham had been shot by her husband, Roger Higginbotham, 33, who then shot himself twice. He also died.

Police said the two were scheduled to have a hearing in divorce court the following day. Both lived in Miami, but had been separated. They apparently met by mutual agreement that day, police said.

Mrs. Higginbotham was a native of Bluefield, W. Va.

Surviving: daughters, Melissa Ann, Angela Lynn, both of Miami; mother, Mrs. Mary Forrlin of North Beach, Md.; brothers, Blaine Weddle of Owensville Ky., Ronald Weddle of Miami, Fla.; sister, Mrs. Rosa Lee McFadden of Miami, Fla.

Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Monday in Peters Cemetery, Dothan. The body is being sent to Dodd-Payne Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

Waverly, Ohio - Howard W. Higginbotham, 63, of Waverly, formerly of Kanawha County, W. Va., died yesterday in A pike County hospital, apparently of a heart attack.

Lucy Higginbotham Mann (1907-1976) WV

Illness Claims Mrs. Lucy Mann

Mrs. Lucy Higginbotham Mann, widow of Bluefield investment broker, James E. Mann and sister of Dr. Upshur Higginbotham of Bluefield, died Monday at her home at 530 Parkway, Bluefield, after a long illness. She was 69.

A former teacher with the Mercer County Board of Education and Bluefield College, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bluefield. Born in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Upshur and Roberta Kessler Higginbotham. She attended public schools in Oklahoma and graduated from Monticello Seminary and West Virginia University.

Mrs. Mann was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Her husband preceded her in death in April of last year.

Survivors include one son, James E. Mann of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Mary Katherine Adams of Kingsport, Tenn.; one additional brother, Henry Higginbotham of Elkins; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mercer Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield with Rev. Richard Rouquie officiating. Entombment will follow in Monte Vista Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

Pallbearers: James Brown, Jack Spear, Al Modena, Robert Lux, Ed Shumate, and Mirto Corte.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Bluefield and the American Cancer Society.

James T. Higginbotham, 66, of 726 Tazewell Ave., Bluefield, Va., died Friday morning in a Bluefield hospital following a short illness.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Beverly and Eliza Higginbotham. He was a retired employee of the Tazewell County School Board and previously had operated a garage. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va., where he was president of the Men’s Bible Class. He was also a member of Harman Masonic Lodge No. 222, Beni Kedem Temple in Charleston, and the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elinor Higginbotham; one daughter, Mrs. Keith Sawyer of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. George Hess of Richlands and Mrs. Randolph Blackwell of Knoxville, Tenn.; three brothers, Joe Higginbotham and Gene Higginbotham, both of Richlands, and Bob Higginbotham of Bluefield, Va.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va., with the Rev. Robert Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road.

Ansted—Dr. Alton Ernest Higginbotham, 74, of Ansted, died Friday at home after a short illness.

He was a dentist in Gauley Bridge for the past 36 years and a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church at Ansted. A graduate of Louisville College of Dentistry, Dr. Higginbotham was a member of the Masons, the Scottish Rite Bodies, the Shrine, the Elk Lodge, the New River Dental Society, and the West Virginia and American Dental Associations.

Surviving: wife, Lillie; daughter, Mrs. Jan Mitri of Matoon, Ill.; son, Dr. Rex M. Higginbotham of Albany, Calif.; five grandchildren.

A 40 year resident of Dunbar, he practiced optometry there for 35 years and was a member of the First Church of God on Main Street in Charleston.

B.J. (Jack) Higginbotham, 41, of Gardner, died Thursday morning in a Princeton hospital following a short illness.

Born at Bethel, he was a son of Dewey A. and Mary Edith Gearheart Higginbotham of Gardner. He was an employee of the Norfolk & Western Railway car shops in Princeton and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and the Lilly Grove Community Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his widow, Mrs. Mable Carper Higginbotham; four daughters, Donna Whittaker, Teresa Whittaker, Jackie Higginbotham and Tammy Higginbotham, all of the home; and three sisters,, Miss Georgia Higginbotham and Mrs. Lorene Pettrey, both of Gardner, and Mrs. Loretta Dinger of Topeka, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the George W. Seaver Chapel in Princeton with the Rev. Doug Williams and Rev. James Coburn officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Bluefield-Princeton Road.

Thomas Charles Higginbotham, 66, of 170 Circle Dr., died Sunday at 6:15 p.m. at East Fairmont Personal Care Center. He was born in Chiefton on Oct. 8, 1910, a son of the late Haymond H. Higginbotham and Anna B. Tucker. His first wife, Violet Way Higginbotham preceded him in death.

Survivors include his widow, Alma Low Haines; five step-brothers, George Tucker of Core, Junior and Clyde, both of Mt. Morris, Pa., Harold of Fairmont and Leroy of Rivesville; two sisters, Mrs. John (Mabel) Hertzel of Rivesville and Mrs. Vern (Lillian) Miller of Erie, Pa.; three nieces and seven nephews.

He was a retired employee of the Federal No. 1 mine, where he had worked as an electrician. He also had worked at the Bethlehem Mine at Dakota and the Consol Mine at Williamson. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local No. 4047.

He was a retired employee of Huntington Alloys, Inc. He was born in Jackson County.

Mrs. Mary Edith Higginbotham, 77, of Gardener Road, Princeton, died Monday night at a Princeton hospital after a long illness.

Born at Speedway, she was a daughter of the late Will and Ruth Hall Gearheart. A lifelong resident of Mercer County, she was a member of the Lilly Grove Community Church. She was preceded in death by three sons.

Survivors include her husband, Dewey A. Higginbotham; three daughters, Georgie Higginbotham of the home, Mrs. Lorene Pettrey of Gardener and Mrs. Loretta Dinger of Topeka, Kan.; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Keaton of Charleston; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at George W. Seaver Chapel in Princeton with the Rev. Paul Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens on Bluefield-Princeton Road.

Pallbearers: David White, Willis Mathena, Jack Blankenship, Victor Joyce, Clyde Church and Bobby Higginbotham.

Upshur Higginbotham (1910-1978) WV

Headline: Higginbotham Dies At 68

Dr. Upshur Higginbotham, a prominent Bluefield physician, died Sunday morning at St. Luke’s Hospital following a long illness. He was 68.

He retired as chief of staff of St. Luke’s in 1976, a position he had held for nine years. He continued his medical practice with St. Luke’s Medical Group until the time of his death.

A spokesman announced Sunday that the St. Luke’s Medical Group office will be closed Tuesday in his memory.

Born in Charleston, he was the son of the late Abel Parker Upshur Higginbotham and Roberta Kesler Higginbotham Scott. Residing most of his life in the Bluefield area, he attended Bluefield High School and was a graduate of Greenbrier Military Academy. He received his liberal arts education at West Virginia University and was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. James E. (Lucy) Mann.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield and the American Heart Association. At the time of his death, he was residing at the Colonial Garden Apartments in Bluefield, Va.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Crockett Higginbotham of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Richard Lee (Ann) Gibson of Nashville, Tenn.; three sons, Upshur Higginbotham Jr. of Shady Spring, John Thomas Higginbotham of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Henry Kesler Higginbotham II of Pulaski, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Harry (Mary Catherine) Adams of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Henry Kesler Higginbotham I; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at Hawkins Chapel Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Rouquie officiating. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 9 p.m. at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bluefield.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association and the First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield.

Mrs. Ruby Woods Higginbotham, 74, of 524 Teel Road died in a local hospital at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday following a long illness.

Born May 3, 1904, at Pearisburg, Va., she was a daughter of the late James and Emma Gordon Woods.

Mrs. Higginbotham was a resident of Raleigh County for the past 10 years, prior to that she lived at Huntington. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Heath C. Higginbotham, Oct. 17, 1958.

Survivors include two sons, Heath C. Jr. of Beckley and William J. of Huntington; one sister, Mrs. Mary Brotherton of Pearisburg; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Ross M. Evans officiating. Burial will be in Pearisburg.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1913, near Mannington, a son of the late Wesley and Jennie Mike Higginbotham.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Susie Jane Stevens of Ohio and Mrs. Catherine Martin of Fairmont; two brothers, William and John Higginbotham, both of Mannington; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Efaw and Mrs. Hazel Baker, both of Mannington; one stepson; and several grandchildren.

Two sisters are deceased.

She had lived in East Liverpool, Ohio, and attended Pleasantview Church, Belpre, and was a member of Ben Fortney Rebekah Lodge 694, Belpre. She was a former employee of A.B. Chance Co., Parkersburg, and the Wood County Health Department.

Surviving are two sons, Robert P. Hickenbottom, Williamstown, and F.D. Hickenbottom of Melbourne, Fla.; two daughters, Amelia Hickenbottom, Parkersburg, and Mrs. Jean Snider of Belpre; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Smith, Parkersburg and C.A. Smith of Nitro; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Pearson and Mrs. Flora B. Peters, both of Parkersburg.

Her husband, Friend R. Hickenbottom, preceded her in death.

Mrs. James (Ada) Higginbotham, 98, of 132 Williams St. in Bluefield died Saturday afternoon in a Bluefield hospital following a long illness.

Born in Amherst Court House, Va., March 4, 1881, she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Pauline Wright. She attended the County School of Amherst and Virginia State College. Mrs. Higginbotham taught school in Amherst County for a number of years. She was a member of Court Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va. and was a member of the church choir. She was married to James Leslie Higginbotham who preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Peyton R. Higginbotham of Bluefield; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Sinkford and Richardson Funeral Home in Bluefield with Rev. J. Matthew Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Amherst Court House, Va.

Friends will serve as pallbearers and flower bearers. Friends may call at the funeral home in Bluefield today from 6 to 9 p.m.

Lulu Dell Hildreth Higginbotham (1888-1979) WV

Mrs. Lulu Dell Higginbotham, 90, of Franklin Street, Mannington, died late Wednesday in her home. She was born July 1888 at Margaret, a daughter of the late Alva Henderson and Sarah Jane Garrett Hildreth. Her husband, Heber Clark (Pete) Higginbotham, died March 12, 1972.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, John E. Hildreth, Houston, Texas; Robert Hildreth, Danville, Calif.; Richard Hildreth, Sandy, Utah; Mrs. Hildreth, Bartlett, Tenn.; and Mrs. D.C. (Judy) Smith, Parker, Colo.; three sister-in-laws, Mrs. Isabelle Hildreth, Littleton, Colo.; Mrs. Fred (Opal) Straight, and Mrs. Mary Higginbotham, both of Mannington. Her only brother, Dr. Aubrey C. Hildreth, died in 1975.

She was a member of the Margaret United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at the Masters Funeral Home in Mannington where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Henry Matheny will officiate and burial will be made in Mannington Memorial Park.

Geraldine Sayre Higginbotham (1921-1979) WV

Eleanor – Mrs. Geraldine "Jerry" Higginbotham, 58, of Eleanor, Putnam County, died Thursday at home after a short illness.

She was a resident of Eleanor and a retired cook for the Putnam Aging Program. She was a member of the Buffalo Church of Christ, the Forrest Rose Rebekah Lodge, Poca, the Upper Vandalia Historical Society and the West Virginia Extension Homemakers.

Surviving: husband, Otho; daughter, Mrs. Sharon E. Miller of Winfield; sons, Ronald E. Sr. of Eleanor, John L. at home; mother, Mrs. Anna Sayre of Nitro; sisters, Mrs. Pauline Barnett of Melbourne, Fla., Mrs. Jeanette Winter of Nitro, Mrs. Maxine Jordan of Red House; brothers, Franklin L. Sayre of Dunbar, Warren A. Sayre and Lawrence Sayre, both of St. Albans, Donald E. Sayre of Eleanor.

Service will be 2 p.m. today in Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with George Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

Sherman Higginbotham (1914-1979) WV

Sherman Higgenbotham, 65, of Rt. 1, Core, died at Monongalia General Hospital on Oct. 26, 1979.

He was born in Kilarm, W.Va., on May 1, 1914, a son of the late Albert and Sarah Ann Phillips Higgenbotham.

He was a retired coal miner. He was a Protestant by faith.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Stewart Higgenbotham; two daughters, Mrs. Kay Bosley of Rt. 1, Core, and Mrs. Terry Simpson of Rt. 2; two sons, Jimmy of Clarksburg and Benny of Rt. 1, Core; one brother, Charles Higgenbotham of Morgantown; 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and one sister.

John E. Higinbotham (1915-1979) WV

John E. Higinbotham, 64, of 213 Murray Ave., died Thursday morning in Fairmont General hospital. He was born in Fairmont Aug. 22, 1915, a son of the late Lawrence and Mona Bell Higinbotham.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Jenkins Higinbotham; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Paula Lee) Coakley of Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, and Mrs. James (Nancy Ann) Kincell of Rock Lake; and by six grandchildren.

A daughter, Anna Lee Higinbotham, and a brother, William L. Higinbotham are deceased.

He was an employee of the State Highway Department. He was a member of the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church and the Eagles.

Friends may call at the Frey Home for Funerals from 4-9 p.m. Friday and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, the time of services in the funeral home with the Rev. Graham Robertson officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Herbert Clay Higginbotham, 57, of Dora, Ala., died Saturday evening in his home. He was born March 30, 1922, at Mannington, a son of Mrs. Mary E. Caroll Higginbotham and the late Luther Lee Higginbotham.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude McInturff Higginbotham in 1955, and his second wife, Dorothy Cooper Higginbotham.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda, Dora; a son, Charles, Dora; two stepdaughters, Debbie White and Linda Watts, both of Dora; seven grandchildren; one step-grandson; three brothers, Okey L. Higginbotham, Marshall Lester Higginbotham and Joseph Higginbotham, all of Mannington; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Burnfield, Mrs. Benjamin (Sarah) Burnfield, both of Warren, Ohio; Mrs. Rose Spencer, Laurel, Md. One sister, Lula, is deceased.

He was a veteran of World War II.
